Hello
I want to use a Kallax
KALLAX
Shelf unit, black-brown
laid horizontally on the floor as a shoe storage shelf. The shoes should be placed inside the compartments.
To do this, I want to install a shelf board in the center of each of the 4 openings, so I can store shoes both above and below in each compartment.
Unfortunately, IKEA does not offer shelves specifically made for the Kallax.
I found some shelf boards in the kitchen section that I could cut to size and install inside the Kallax:
Utrusta
Shelf board, black wood effect
Would this be the same black-brown color tone, or does anyone have a better idea (shelf boards from other IKEA products) that would be more suitable?
Best regards

IKEA-Freund16 Apr 2016 11:21Hello,
most photos showing the interior of these shelves are still of the Expedit model and not yet of the Kallax.
The picture illustrates this quite well (but there are also people who build hamster cage holders from these shelves and then cut ventilation openings into the panels).

The linked image clearly shows the frame construction made of chipboard strips, which is quite similar in the Kallax as well (see also the comments in the link above).
If you position the shelf supports so that the holes go into the chipboard frame, it should work – however, the holes would then be quite close to the edges and the support pegs would be clearly visible. How wide the frame is remains another question...

Sektionschef18 Apr 2016 15:01Cool service, with the correct SK-link right away.
Why do I need a cover panel? Do you mean on top, so the screws aren’t visible?
And which one would be the right choice: Laxarby or Tingsryd?
Is there also an edge band for it, since I need to cut the cover panel?
Can’t I also screw the top panels so the screws are on the inside? Then I wouldn’t need a cover panel at all.
Best regards

IKEA-Experte18 Apr 2016 16:57If you turn the cabinet top upside down, the groove for the back panel will face upward. You definitely need a top panel on one side if you want a continuous surface on top. If you also install panels on the sides, you will have a uniform finish. Whether TYNGSRYD or another option is better, I would decide based on visual inspection. There are no matching edge bands, but since you mentioned that one side faces the wall, you can apply almost any edge band to all the hidden sides.

Sektionschef19 Apr 2016 14:14Thank you, Ikea expert,
I will take a look at the fronts at Ikea.
Although, installing the shelves in the Kallax seems easier to me than using a Metod wall cabinet.

robi_aus_ffm19 Apr 2016 16:23this tip from an IKEA expert:

is really great, but the price is outrageous.
however, you can easily make this yourself at low cost.
just use longer Utrusta shelf boards.
cut them on the left and right sides, then use the cut-off pieces as supports on each side, attaching them with two wood screws (or use the plastic clips included with the shelf boards and drill holes for them). Done.
Cost... less than 4 euros per shelf.
