Hello everyone, I am planning to install doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. My question is: Do you need any special tools for retrofitting the KALLAX doors beyond standard tools like screwdrivers and a drill?
I already have some experience with furniture assembly but want to make sure I have everything necessary on hand before I start to avoid any issues. I am especially interested in whether the included mounting hardware is sufficient on its own or if special drill bits, wrenches, or positioning aids are recommended.
Perhaps someone has already installed doors on a KALLAX and can share their experience regarding which tools are truly essential and which additional aids might be helpful for a precise and secure installation.

To explain it plainly: The original KALLAX doors are designed to be mounted on side units that have a standardized cylindrical hole with a diameter of 35 mm (1.4 inches) for the cup hinges. This hole cannot be easily made with a regular drill bit because it does not replace a through drill but instead creates a flat, round recess.
Therefore, if your shelving unit does not already have pre-drilled holes, you will definitely need a Forstner bit or a similar specialized drill bit to create the holes cleanly. Without such a tool, even with advanced DIY skills, it will be challenging to install the hinges neatly and accurately.
So: yes, specialized tools are necessary if the shelving has no suitable pre-drilled holes for door mounting. Otherwise, a screwdriver or cordless drill is sufficient.

About a month ago, I retrofitted KALLAX doors at my place and can confirm: a 35 mm (1.4 inch) Forstner bit really makes the installation much easier!
At first, I was unsure and only used a cordless screwdriver and a regular drill bit, but after the first misplaced hole, I bought the Forstner bit.
The tool isn’t expensive, and the doors fit perfectly without sticking. Really happy with the result! 🙂

So if you don’t have pre-drilled holes in the shelf, you definitely need a Forstner bit or a similar specialized drill bitThank you for the clear and factual response. That was the most important information for me. I hadn’t realized during preparation that the hole can’t simply be replaced with a regular drill bit.
I will get a 35 mm (1.4 inch) Forstner bit to do it properly.
Do you or anyone else have tips on how to accurately mark the drill hole positions? Are there any reliable tricks?

Did you or anyone else have tips on how to mark the drilling hole positions precisely?Yes, definitely use a drill guide or template. Unfortunately, IKEA does not offer an official drill guide for KALLAX doors, but at hardware stores, you can find quite affordable universal drill guides for cup hinges. These help align the position accurately and guide the drill bit.
If you don’t want to use a drill guide, I recommend taking precise measurements and marking with a fine pencil—ideally taking several reference measurements, for example at the top, bottom, and inside, to prevent the hole from shifting.
A spirit level also helps to ensure the position is not moved to one side.

Unfortunately, IKEA does not offer an official drilling template for KALLAX doorsExactly, this is a common issue. So here’s my advice to Caleb: If you want to do it professionally, you can buy a standard drilling jig for 35 mm (1.4 inches) cup hinges. These are available for about 10–15 EUR.
Additionally, I recommend:
- Pre-drill with a small drill bit (2–3 mm / 0.08–0.12 inches) at the marked spot to prevent splitting.
- Drill carefully and with steady pressure, even when using a Forstner bit.
- Be mindful of the depth stop: The hole should not go all the way through but be about 11–13 mm (0.43–0.51 inches) deep – this is important for the hinge.
How far along are you with the shelving parts or the doors? Do you already have the hinges?
Thanks @Nathanaelk for the helpful tips on pre-drilling and drill depth!
I have already ordered the hinges – original from IKEA, suitable for KALLAX. The shelf units are fully assembled, unfortunately without pre-drilled holes on the sides.
I will get a suitable drilling jig, a 35mm (1⅜ inch) Forstner bit, and a depth stop for the drill.
If anyone has recommendations for high-quality yet affordable drilling jigs, I would appreciate the tips.
I will report back on how it went!
