Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of optimizing the available storage space in my IKEA Metod tall cabinets as effectively as possible. Since these cabinets in the kitchen often need to store not only kitchen appliances but also groceries and other items, the question is how to make the best use of the usable space. I am especially interested in tips and tricks for selecting and customizing interior fittings, such as shelves, drawers, or inserts, as the standard solutions often do not meet my needs.

How do you organize your Metod tall cabinets to expand the storage space in a flexible and functional way? Are there any proven methods, special accessories, or DIY solutions that work well?

Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Your question about optimizing storage space in IKEA Metod tall cabinets is well thought out, as with kitchen furniture it’s often not just about the amount of space, but about making better use of the volume.

I would like to ask what you specifically mean by "optimal": Is your priority maximum capacity, or better organization and accessibility through, for example, adjustable shelf heights and drawers? Without this clarity, recommendations can vary widely.

It would also be helpful to know if you have already tried accessories like internal pull-outs or storage boxes, so we can build on your previous experience.

Good point. For me, it’s a combination of both: I want to make the most of the storage space available, but at the same time, everything should be easily accessible and logically arranged. That means that even with high capacity, clarity and order shouldn’t suffer.

So far, I haven’t installed any special pull-outs, only the standard shelves from IKEA. Especially with very tall cabinets (e.g., 212 cm (7 feet)), I find it difficult to use the upper areas efficiently.

For practical storage optimization with Metod tall cabinets, I recommend the following structured approach:

- First, accurately measure the interior height of the cabinet carcass, as IKEA often allows some tolerance for the shelves.
- Using adjustable shelves is effective for adapting the height depending on the items to be stored.
- Drawer modules instead of simple shelves significantly improve access to items stored deep inside.
- Special interior pull-outs and organizer systems from IKEA or third-party suppliers can further enhance the use of corner and upper areas.

The key is modularity to maximize both volume and flexibility.

In addition to the previous recommendations, especially regarding "upper cabinet sections," I would like to add the following:

- Using extendable tall cabinet pull-outs is very effective for high cabinets because it keeps the rear storage space accessible.
- Installing interior cabinet lighting can help improve visibility, particularly in deep and tall cabinets.
- For pantry items, stackable boxes or containers with writable labels that can be placed on shelves are suitable.

It is also worth checking whether Metod cabinets are equipped with accessories specifically designed for taller cabinets, as IKEA sometimes offers different variations in this regard.

I find that very interesting. I currently have simple shelves in the upper section and am considering whether replacing them with drawers is worthwhile. How do the drawers perform in terms of load capacity? I mainly want to store food containers and large, relatively heavy canning jars.

Are such drawers available outside of IKEA that are compatible with Metod, or should I focus on IKEA’s own accessories?
