Barbaros_s29 Oct 2024 08:13Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA Metod kitchen island and want to maximize storage space without making the island look bulky or overwhelm the room. My questions are: What is the best approach for selecting and assembling the Metod base cabinets to optimally combine the available cabinet modules? Which drawer and internal organization systems do you recommend for making intelligent use of storage space? Also, are there any specific tips for securing or stabilizing the island on the floor, especially since it is freestanding? I appreciate any advice that can help simplify the installation and maximize storage.

For optimal space utilization, I recommend combining Metod base cabinets in different widths, for example 60 cm (24 inches) and 40 cm (16 inches), depending on what your room allows. Make sure to use drawer organizers like the VARIERA boxes, which help you efficiently divide the interior space. To stabilize the freestanding island, securing it to the floor or at least screwing the cabinets together is important to prevent twisting. I also recommend using corner panels or side coverings, which make the island look more refined and provide additional support.
Hey Barbaros_s, great project! 😊 If you want lots of storage space, you should definitely use the tall Metod base cabinets with pull-outs. They offer plenty of room, especially for pots and pans! 😀 For even better organization, I really like the VARIERA sorting systems – they make sure you never lose a pot lid again! And don’t worry about the assembly; with proper planning, it’s totally manageable, even if it seems complex at first. Go for it, it’s going to be amazing!

Are there any special tips for securing or stabilizing the island, especially since it is freestanding? This is indeed a crucial point. A Metod kitchen island is basically assembled from individual modules, so you should firmly screw the modules together using the supplied connectors. For securing the island to the floor, I recommend either a sturdy base frame or special floor glides with locking mechanisms to prevent slipping. Also, when planning the island, you should consider the weight of the countertop—especially with granite or quartz, additional reinforcements are necessary.

I also recommend using corner panels or side panels, which make the island look more premium and provide additional stability. I agree with that. It is particularly important to securely install all panels so the island looks complete and the cabinets do not allow any sideways movement.
When choosing your drawers, keep in mind that IKEA offers extra-deep drawers for the Metod system, which you should definitely use on the widest side for maximum storage capacity.
Do you have an idea of the countertop material you want? This greatly affects the weight and the eventual stability.

Do you have an idea about the preferred countertop materials? This also greatly affects the weight and later stability. Thanks for the tip! At the moment, I’m leaning towards a quartz countertop because it is durable and easy to maintain, but this will need to be considered during assembly. We’ll see if a support frame becomes necessary.
Regarding the interior, I’ve looked at the VARIERA boxes and think they would be well suited. Do you have recommendations on how to best plan the drawer organization so that everything remains easily accessible? I’m also wondering if a combination of pull-out drawers and regular doors makes more sense to optimize the space for dishes and pantry items.
As for the assembly itself: Are there any special tips for screwing the individual modules together? Should the order be followed carefully?

Are there any special tips for assembling the individual modules? Do you have to pay attention to the order? Yes, definitely. I recommend assembling each cabinet individually first and adjusting it—this means installing and setting doors and drawers. Afterward, you can position the cabinets side by side and secure them with connectors. This helps prevent errors from accumulating during assembly. Also, make sure to level the cabinets on the floor, as unevenness can cause wobbling or misalignment.

Mixing drawers and regular doors makes more sense I recommend a combination: for frequently used kitchen utensils and supplies, drawers offer better access, especially in deep cabinets. For bulky or rarely used items, you can use doors with shelves. This way you optimize storage space and working comfort.
