Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to expand my kitchen with an IKEA Metod kitchen island and am especially interested in solutions that offer a lot of storage space without sacrificing a modern, attractive appearance. My kitchen is not very large, but the island should centrally serve both as a workspace and a storage powerhouse. I am considering how to make the best use of the Metod cabinets, perhaps with various drawers, pull-outs, or special internal organizers to accommodate everything efficiently.
I am particularly interested in:
- Which combinations of the Metod units work best for maximizing storage space?
- How can modern fronts and countertops be integrated to maintain a clean look even with a larger island?
- Are there any special considerations for assembly or installation, especially when combining multiple cabinet modules into one island?
I look forward to your experiences, concrete suggestions, and any advice on what to definitely avoid in a project like this. Thanks in advance!

About a year ago, I built a similarly sized Metod island and can understand how overwhelming the options can be at first. For me, it was important to maintain a certain lightness and clarity despite the many features.
Regarding stability, using a continuous countertop made of glass or granite actually provided noticeable stiffness. I also installed a sturdy wooden brace under the countertop because the Ikea components alone, without walls, don’t offer complete stability.
As for storage space, the combination of wide drawers for pots and pans and narrow, shallower drawers for cutlery worked well. I also use inserts to really optimize storage space, which helps keep things organized and prevents clutter.
One question for you: How important is the seating area? I had to make compromises on my island due to the maximum width.

Having one or two stools would be nice but is not a must. I prefer a bit more storage space over a large seating area.
Regarding the bracing, could you explain in more detail how you implemented it? I’m concerned that additional supports might reduce storage space.
Thanks also for the tip about keeping the island light—I don’t want it to feel like a bulky piece dominating the room.
To explain the stability aspect of a Metod kitchen island in more detail: fundamentally, the individual modules are designed for wall mounting and not for freestanding islands. Therefore, you can take additional measures to ensure stability,
- Connecting fittings: Ikea offers special eccentric connectors for Metod that tightly clamp the modules together.
- Support panel: A continuous countertop that is sufficiently load-bearing (e.g., quartz composite, natural stone, or high-pressure laminate (HPL) in a suitably sturdy design) also contributes significantly.
- Internal reinforcements: Adding wooden strips or aluminum profiles to reinforce the base and top panels in the island can make the entire structure more rigid.
- Plinth design: Closed plinth panels add stability and at the same time conceal fixings.
The risk that supports reduce storage space can be minimized through clever planning, for example by placing reinforcements in less-used areas or integrating them into drawer rails.
Finally, a question: What cabinet height and depth are you planning? The standard is usually 60cm (24 inches) deep and 80–90cm (31–35 inches) high, but there are also variants that offer more space or more ergonomic working heights.

In your situation, I would like to suggest the following points:
- Be sure to plan enough storage space at different heights so that not everything ends up in the lower drawers; this helps protect your back.
- Especially with a lot of storage, clutter can quickly build up, so use interior organizers (dividers, boxes) from the start.
- Matte gray fronts look very modern and understated, and they pair well with lighter countertops.
- If seating is of secondary importance, you can, for example, have the countertop extend to allow seating on stools without needing to build deeper cabinets.
Regarding installation: consider scheduling a consultation with an expert at Ikea, who can provide free advice on planning with Metod and assist with selecting the correct connectors.

To complement the previous contributions:
When designing modern kitchen islands with the Ikea Metod system, the following technical details should be considered:
- Cabinet widths: Wide drawers (80 cm (31.5 inches)) offer maximum storage space per cabinet but may not fit every room layout. 40 cm (16 inches) and 60 cm (24 inches) modules can be combined flexibly for planning.
- Fronts: Matte lacquered MDF panels are durable and scratch-resistant; for example, Ikea offers Voxtorp or Släta fronts, which work well for a modern look.
- Worktops: Ceramic is extremely durable and heat-resistant but relatively expensive; laminate with natural stone appearance is more affordable and easy to maintain.
- Assembly materials: Ikea provides special Metod connector sets that securely join the modules and prevent warping.
Regarding drawer runners: Always choose full-extension runners with soft-close; this significantly enhances the usability and quality of the island.
Worth knowing: The maximum load capacity per drawer is usually around 30 kg (66 lbs), which is sufficient for normal kitchen use, but permanent overloading should be avoided.

I recently planned and assembled a similar Metod island, so here are a few practical tips:
- When selecting the countertop thickness, make sure the connecting brackets have the same height to ensure the modules are perfectly level.
- For more storage space, use deeper drawers at the bottom and shallower ones at the top; this is more ergonomic and practical.
- For matte fronts, I recommend cleaning with mild detergents to keep them looking good and prevent discoloration.
- Take advantage of drawers with internal compartments to help maintain better organization.
Regarding stability: We also installed brackets from the inside that are not visible, which made the island very stable without losing any space.
