Good morning everyone, I am planning to replace the side panels on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet because they are damaged and I would like to use a different color. Therefore, I am wondering how the replacement of the cabinet sides works technically.

I am particularly interested in whether you can simply unscrew the sides and attach new ones, or if you might damage the entire cabinet structure if you are not careful. Are there any special fasteners or anchors that I should be aware of?

Also, it would be helpful to know if the existing drill holes and screw holes will still fit when replacing the side panels, or if the sides may need to be adjusted.

I am familiar with some basic kitchen construction terms (assembly, carcass, side panel, etc.), but I would like to understand the exact procedure, including tools, detailed solutions, or common issues to watch out for.

I look forward to your insights and tips!

You need to loosen the screws on the sides first, the ones that connect to the cabinet body. Once the side panel is removed, you can simply attach the new part. Most of the time, the holes align because Ikea uses standardized fittings.

Hello @joelfa, replacing the Ikea Metod cabinet side panels is basically straightforward, but there are some technical details to keep in mind.

The side panels are usually attached to the carcass with dowels and screws. This means:
- First, remove the shelves to access the screws.
- Loosen the screws, often crosshead, located on the inner edge of the side panel.
- After loosening, gently pull the side panel off, as dowels are installed to prevent shifting.

If you want to install a side panel in a different color, make sure the drill holes and dowel holes align; otherwise, be careful not to drill new holes in the carcass.

A tip: when removing a side panel, take note of the exact position of the dowels and check before fitting the new panel that all joints sit flush. Avoid applying excessive force, as this can deform the carcass.

What tools do you have available? And what does the cabinet currently look like—is it fully assembled or still relatively easy to access?

Thank you for the detailed response. These specific details are exactly what I needed.

To answer your questions: I have a cordless drill, a Phillips screwdriver, and a few smaller tools. The cabinet is installed—in other words, built in between two walls—and connected to other Metod cabinets.

Do you think it’s possible to remove the side panels despite this integration without having to dismantle the adjacent units? I’m unsure how much clearance there is when the cabinet is firmly fixed in place.

I am very familiar with the problem of built-in cabinets. When Metod cabinets are connected to each other, the sides are often fixed with connector fittings.

- You can’t simply loosen the screws of adjacent cabinets without compromising stability.
- Therefore, I recommend carefully checking which screws hold the side panel of your cabinet.
- Sometimes you need to slightly loosen the adjacent cabinet side to create enough space.

I would suggest removing the cabinet doors first and then gently approaching the connection points with a thin lever.

This helps prevent damage to the frames or fittings.

The replacement can work if you first loosen the connection screws on the adjoining side. Usually, these are small screws on the back panel or at the corners. After that, you can remove and replace the side panel. Important: The new side panels must be identical.
