Ilir1Hello everyone, I am planning to customize my IKEA Metod kitchen and pantry cabinets and am especially interested in ways to enhance their appearance using paint or adhesive films. I would like to know which types of paint (e.g., lacquer, chalk, or acrylic paints) are suitable, how they can be applied to the surfaces, and which kinds of films provide a durable and attractive finish. Tips on surface preparation, protection after painting or applying films, and potential challenges during the process would also be very helpful. Perhaps someone has experience with specific brands or techniques that work particularly well or not so well. Thank you in advance for your detailed feedback!

Timmyse365 May 2021 09:47Hello Ilir1, I find your project really exciting! I’ve personally redesigned my Metod fronts with paint before, and I can assure you that thorough preparation is key. Sanding, dust removal, and a suitable primer are, in my opinion, essential for a durable result. However, I was also unsure if I could avoid every mistake—especially when painting, drips or runs can happen quickly. But don’t worry, with some patience it works out! What color did you have in mind exactly, or are you still in the selection phase?

For paint, I recommend water-based acrylic paint. That may be true, but it is often overlooked that most Metod fronts are melamine-coated. Especially with films, it is advisable to perform an adhesion test before applying them, since not every film will bond permanently to this surface. If you skip testing, you risk the film developing bubbles or peeling off soon after application – and paint, even when primed, can also lose adhesion, particularly if the coating contains oily residues.
To prepare the surface optimally, I recommend first thoroughly cleaning it with a degreasing cleaner, followed by fine sanding with 220-grit sandpaper. When painting on melamine, it is important to use special primers designed for plastics. Alternatively, if flexibility is required, PVC films or HPL (high-pressure laminate) foils can be used, but these should be professionally applied to ensure long-term quality. A protective layer of clear varnish or an appropriate sealant increases durability.
