Hello everyone,

I’m just asking for some help here 🙂

Our first IKEA kitchen is assembled except for the combination mentioned above. Our problem is a unit consisting of a Domsjö sink including a Metod base cabinet, with a Skinande dishwasher right next to it. The challenge is that, due to space constraints, it must remain a standalone two-piece unit, meaning the sink on the left and the dishwasher immediately on the right. This is all positioned between a wall on the left and a door on the right.

Since the sink requires a countertop, my proposed solution is the following: attach a piece of countertop (about 5cm (2 inches)) on the left side of the base cabinet so the sink can be installed on top, and then install the countertop continuously on the right side of the base cabinet, extending flush to the outer edge of the dishwasher. Insert the sink, and cover the dishwasher on the right side with a cover panel.

Is something like this practical?

I would be very grateful for alternative suggestions.

Best regards

Hello, the countertop cannot rest on the dishwasher. It seems best to me to install support panels made from countertop material next to the sink cabinet and the dishwasher.

As the IKEA expert mentioned, you cannot use the dishwasher to support the countertop. I also have the dishwasher placed at the edge. I simply attached a HAMMARP oak countertop to the floor using an aluminum angle bracket and secured it on top with another aluminum angle bracket to the countertop. It is important to leave a 3–5mm (0.1–0.2 inch) gap under the side panel in case water spills, so the countertop does not absorb it.

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Maybe a silly question, but why can't I install the panel directly on the dishwasher?

Because it is not designed for this purpose and may need to be removed during repairs.

But you don’t want to use the Domsjö top-mount sink? Then you definitely need an additional cabinet next to the base cabinet under the sink to support the basin. (We just went through this ourselves 😉.
