ARTAN64Hello everyone,
I am currently working on assembling a base cabinet with drawer slides for my Ikea Metod kitchen project and have a detailed question: What is the best way to install the drawer slides correctly so that everything operates smoothly and the drawers lock in properly?
Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which screws and brackets are recommended for the guide rails in Metod?
- Is there a particular order for attaching the slides to the cabinet carcass and the drawer?
- How can potential fitting inaccuracies that might affect the sliding motion be avoided?
- Are any special tools advisable?
I have partly read the assembly instructions, but some parts are not entirely clear to me, especially regarding the fixing of the metal slides.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The Metod drawer slides are attached using special screws, which Ikea usually includes in the delivery. First, install the slide on the cabinet body, then attach the slide to the drawer. Pay attention to the markings in the instructions, as they help ensure the correct spacing.
Hello ARTAN64,
I’m happy to provide you with a more detailed guide for installing the drawer slides on IKEA Metod:
1. Preparation:
- Make sure all parts are complete: metal slides, screws, and covers.
- Get a Phillips screwdriver, preferably cordless.
2. Installing the slides on the cabinet:
- Align the slides with the pre-drilled holes on the sides of the base cabinet.
- Secure the slides firmly at both the top and bottom; the alignment must be perfectly parallel.
3. Attaching the slides to the drawer:
- Screw the matching slides onto the sides of the drawer.
- Pay close attention to the correct orientation according to the instructions, especially the grooves on the slides.
4. Inserting the drawer:
- Carefully insert the drawer into the mounted slides.
- Check that it moves smoothly without any wobbling.
Common mistakes:
- Screws tightened too loosely, causing the slides to wobble.
- Slides not installed parallel, leading to jamming.
I recommend opening and closing the drawer several times after the initial installation to make any necessary adjustments.

- Screws tightened too loosely, causing the guide to wobble. That is true, but I would argue that the real problem often lies in Ikea not adhering perfectly to the hole dimensions in every cabinet. Anyone who follows the instructions blindly will run into issues later.
My advice: Don’t rely solely on the holes. Pre-fix the parts and check with a spirit level and ruler. Everyone underestimates the importance of this precision here.
Additional information:
- IKEA Metod cabinets usually use drawer slides with soft-close mechanisms.
- When attaching the slides to the carcass, two screws per slide are standard; please tighten all screws with the appropriate Allen key or Phillips screwdriver.
- The drawer runners are factory pre-drilled, but there is some tolerance range, so precise alignment to the millimeter is crucial.
Furthermore, I recommend test-fitting the drawers before final fixing to check if both sides slide smoothly and evenly.
Tools:
- Cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque
- Spirit level or metal ruler for alignment
Common troubleshooting:
- Jamming often occurs due to misalignment between the slides.
- Tighten the screws in the carcass again after final installation.
If you like, I can also provide information on attaching the drawer fronts.
