Hello everyone,
I chose the Metod cabinet fronts with glass panels for my new kitchen from Ikea. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that fingerprints and water spots show up very quickly on the glass surfaces, and cleaning them is not that easy, especially without leaving streaks behind.
I would like to know which cleaning products and methods have proven effective for getting the glass fronts clean quickly and streak-free, without damaging the surfaces. Do you use special cloths or tricks? I have already tried quite a few things, from glass cleaner to vinegar water, but I’m still not fully satisfied.
I would be very grateful for any tips and shared experiences!

Hello matthijs,
First of all, it’s good that you’re approaching this topic so thoroughly. I’m familiar with the issue of glass fronts; they are very sensitive when it comes to streaks.
I personally usually use microfiber cloths because they don’t leave lint and pick up dirt well. It’s important not to use regular paper towels or abrasive cloths, as they only cause more streaks.
For cleaning, I use a mild glass cleaner with an alcohol content. If you want to use vinegar water, it’s best to use diluted apple cider vinegar and always wipe afterwards with clean water to prevent any residues that can cause streaks.
Definitely never spray directly onto the glass; instead, apply the cleaner to the cloth and then wipe. Gentle circular motions help clean the surfaces more effectively.
When polishing the fronts dry, it’s best to use a dry, soft microfiber cloth—that works best for me.

Hello matthijs,
I think your question is very well formulated. Especially the desire for quick and streak-free cleaning is really a challenge with glass surfaces, as they are very delicate.
Here is a more detailed approach that has helped me:
- First, gently remove dust from the surface with a soft microfiber cloth, as dust particles can otherwise cause scratches.
- For the cleaning itself, I apply a glass cleaner containing isopropanol to a damp (not too wet) microfiber cloth. Isopropanol evaporates quickly and leaves no streaks.
- Always wipe with straight motions instead of circular ones (horizontal or vertical), as this reduces streaking.
- After applying the cleaner, immediately wipe the surface again with a dry microfiber cloth to allow optimal drying.
It is also important not to use too much cleaning product, as that often causes streaks.
A question for you: What type of glass surface do you have exactly? Is it clear glass or frosted glass? There are also specific product recommendations for textured glass surfaces.
Some people also swear by a quick daily cleaning using only water and a microfiber cloth to prevent heavy dirt buildup in the first place.

That probably makes them more sensitive, since fingerprints are especially visible on clear glass.
Regarding the cleaning process, I will try your tips using a microfiber cloth and alcohol-based glass cleaner. I was previously concerned that the alcohol might damage the coating, if there is any. Are there any risks with Ikea Metod glass fronts?
It is also important to me that the cleaning does not take too much time, as I usually want to clean quickly in the kitchen and prefer to avoid lengthy procedures.

You should only be careful with aggressive, corrosive cleaners – those are a no-go.
As a general rule: less is more. Use only a small amount of cleaner and rely more on physically removing dirt with the cloth.
For convenience: I usually clean these fronts right after cooking or eating with a damp microfiber cloth, so no stains or streaks develop.
