VESNA-JO3419 Mar 2023 08:17Hello everyone, after recently purchasing our Ikea Metod kitchen countertop, I’ve encountered a cleaning issue: despite careful cleaning, unsightly streaks often remain, which are especially noticeable on the white surface and somewhat detract from the otherwise clean appearance. I’m interested in how you manage to clean your Ikea Metod countertops with minimal streaks – what products, tools, and cleaning techniques have you found most effective? Any tips on products that work particularly well to avoid leaving smears would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your helpful responses!
First of all, it is important to know exactly what material your Ikea Metod countertop is made of. The series offers various finishes and surfaces, mostly laminate or plastic coatings, which react differently to cleaning agents and mechanical stress.
To avoid streaks, I recommend a three-step process:
- First, wipe off coarse dirt with a microfiber cloth and warm water.
- Then use a mild, pH-neutral cleaning solution, such as a mix of dish soap and water or special laminate cleaners.
- Finally, carefully polish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Important: Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the surface and cause streaking. Also, avoid using too much cleaning solution, as residues left after drying can lead to streaks.
How do you currently clean it exactly, and what products do you use?

How exactly do you clean at the moment, and which products do you use?Currently, I usually wipe with a dish sponge and a standard all-purpose cleaner. After that, I use a dry cotton cloth for polishing, but I still keep seeing streaks, especially noticeable in sunlight. That annoys me a bit because the surface is otherwise really nice.
The issue often lies in the combination of using too much cleaning agent and improper drying. If you use a dry cloth after cleaning, it should be absolutely lint-free – microfiber cloths are ideal for this, better than cotton.
It also helps to wipe the countertop again with a second, slightly damp microfiber cloth after cleaning to remove any residue, and then immediately dry and polish it. This prevents streaks from appearing.
Lastly, you should avoid cleaning the surface in direct sunlight, as the quick drying often makes streaks more visible.

I can understand how frustrating it is when all the hard work doesn’t result in a clean finish. I had a similar experience with my Metod panel. I experimented for a long time and found that using the right cloth really makes a difference. I always use two different microfiber cloths: one for cleaning and another reserved just for drying, to avoid streaks caused by the previous cloth.
I’ve also wondered if the effectiveness varies with different shades of the panel. Stripes tend to be much more noticeable on light surfaces than on dark ones. How is it for you?

Would you say I should change anything else in my cleaning routine, or is using the right cloth usually enough?
