ᐅ How do I clean IKEA Metod glass fronts when dealing with stubborn dirt?

Fefa47Hello everyone,
I have an issue with the glass-coated fronts of my Ikea Metod kitchen: there are some stubborn stains and marks that won't come off with regular glass cleaner or a damp cloth. These are mainly baked-on splashes and greasy residues that have built up over several weeks.
Since Ikea Metod fronts are often made of composite materials and can be sensitive, I don’t want to start using harsh cleaning agents that might cause damage. Does anyone have experience with cleaning these glass fronts effectively yet gently—especially when dealing with such stubborn, dried-on dirt?
What cleaning products and tools would you recommend? Are there any tips for preparing or caring for the surface afterward to prevent it from becoming dull or scratched? I would appreciate specific advice, including things to definitely avoid.
Thanks in advance!

Taylorsi4511 Feb 2019 10:13Hello, I would first try using warm water and a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, it’s best to use a little vinegar water, but not too much to avoid damaging the frame.
Hello Fefa47,
I find your question very thoughtfully formulated, thank you for that.
For cleaning the Ikea Metod glass fronts, I would generally advise against using abrasive cleaners or harsh solvents, as these can damage the surface. Instead, I recommend:
- Dissolving a mild dish soap in warm water
- Gently wiping with a soft microfiber cloth
- For stubborn stains, carefully using vinegar essence diluted at a ratio of 1:5
- Absolutely avoid abrasive sponges
If the stains are dried on, you can lightly dampen the cloth and cover the area for a few minutes; this often helps to loosen the dirt.
I hope this helps you.

Hello!
At first, I was also frustrated with my Metod glass fronts until I discovered a clever trick: Wipe them with a bit of glass cleaner on a damp cloth, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe again with clean water. Sometimes it also helps to gently dab the residues off with a small soft sponge (no abrasive side!). Don’t apply too much pressure, the glass is delicate!
Good luck – you can do it! 🙂

Hello Fefa47,
I would like to explain this in more detail because you need to be especially careful with Ikea Metod glass fronts, as they are glass-like films on medium-density fiberboard.
The surface looks like glass but is not a solid, hard glass panel. Therefore, harsh cleaners, abrasive sponges, or strong chemicals are off limits, as they can cause micro-scratches or dull spots.
If you have stubborn dirt like embedded food residue or grease, proceed as follows:
- First, dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and mild dish soap.
- Keep the treated spot moist by placing the cloth on it for one to two minutes to loosen the dirt.
- Then gently wipe in circular motions to remove the dirt.
- For tougher greasy residue, a mixture of 70% water and 30% household vinegar applied with a soft cloth can help; let it sit for a while.
- Be sure to wipe afterwards with clean water to remove any vinegar residue.
Please avoid harsh cleaners containing alcohol, acetone, or ammonia. These substances can damage the coating.
I also recommend always cleaning the fronts with soft cloths only to prevent scratches.
If the stains are particularly stubborn, I sometimes wonder which cleaning products were used exactly—could you please provide more details so I can offer more specific advice?
Best regards!
