Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with glass fronts in my new kitchen, and I keep encountering a problem when cleaning them: how can I clean the glass fronts to be streak-free without causing fine scratches? I want to avoid harsh cleaners because the surface seems delicate.

Who has good experience with cleaning agents or special cleaning methods that are truly gentle but still make the glass shine without streaks? I look forward to practical tips and advice on what to pay special attention to while cleaning to protect the glass fronts in the long term.

Cleaning IKEA Metod glass fronts requires a few basic guidelines to avoid streaks and scratches:

- Use a soft microfiber cloth, as it protects the surface.
- Use lukewarm water as a base, optionally mixed with a mild dishwashing detergent.
- Do not use abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals such as ammonia or alcohol.
- After cleaning, immediately wipe dry with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

For tougher stains, a special ammonia-free glass cleaner is recommended, but always test it first in an inconspicuous area.

Following these steps ensures a streak-free, scratch-free surface over the long term.

I only use a damp microfiber cloth without any cleaner and then wipe dry afterwards. It works great for me without any scratches or streaks.

Regarding the question of streak-free and scratch-resistant cleaning of IKEA Metod glass fronts: It is important to know that the glass fronts are usually made of tempered glass with a special protective coating, which can be damaged by improper cleaning.

I recommend the following steps:

- First, remove coarse dust and dirt with a soft broom head or a dry microfiber cloth, as even the smallest particles can cause scratches.
- For wet cleaning, use a solution of lukewarm water and a few drops of a neutral dish soap. The dish soap should be free of alcohol, ammonia, and bleach.
- Use a very soft, clean microfiber cloth, preferably one designed specifically for delicate surfaces.
- Use the damp cloth in circular motions, but without applying strong pressure to avoid micro-scratches.
- After wet cleaning, immediately polish with a dry microfiber cloth. I recommend a special polishing cloth for glass, as regular cotton cloths may leave lint behind.

For heavier grease or oil stains, you can carefully spot-clean beforehand with 70% isopropyl alcohol, but only after testing in a hidden area.

Have you tried microfiber cloths that are specifically marketed as streak-free? I have personally had good experiences with them.

Could you describe which type of cleaner you are currently using and what kind of scratches you have noticed? Are they fine lines or more obvious gouges?

Thank you for the detailed answer! So far, I have been using a standard glass cleaning spray (not one specific to IKEA), but instead of a microfiber cloth, I use a regular cotton kitchen cloth. The scratches are very fine, almost like sanding marks – more visible when the light hits from the side. They likely come from fine dust particles or the rougher texture of the cloth. Therefore, I think the combination of glass cleaner and cloth is not ideal. I will definitely try the microfiber cloth you recommended.

Do you have any tips on whether these scratches can still be removed, or does the glass unfortunately have to stay like this? Are there any kinds of sealants for such surfaces that can be applied to better protect against future damage?

That is very likely true. Tiny sand or dust particles act like sandpaper. Therefore, it is crucial to completely remove dust before wet cleaning.

Typically, IKEA Metod glass fronts already have a protective lacquer or coating, which is sensitive to abrasive substances and solvents. An additional glass-based sealant is rarely useful because it often is not compatible with the existing layers.

My advice: protect the surface by cleaning gently and regularly using appropriate cloths. If you still have damage, a professional glass repair service can reduce light scratches, but visible gouges are usually difficult to remove completely.
