I want to be as well-prepared as possible and have all necessary aids on hand. Which hand tools or power tools are needed to professionally and efficiently assemble and install the cabinets? Are there any special tools that significantly simplify the process or are even required, which are not usually found in a standard toolbox? I would appreciate tips based on experience, including less obvious tools.
I find this question fundamentally interesting because many people rely too much on the tools provided by Ikea (i.e., the small hex key). While this is convenient, it is far from ideal. Anyone who wants to assemble their Metod kitchen properly will hardly manage without a decent cordless drill with a hex bit and will not benefit from relying solely on manual effort.
In my opinion, a good drill with the appropriate drill bits and a spirit level are also indispensable, as installing the upper cabinets must be done precisely. If you are careless here, you will have problems with doors and drawers later on.
Those who want to do the job right should also pay attention to screw damping and the correct torque – this is not important for everyone, but professional tools significantly ease the process.

To provide a clear overview, here is a brief summary of the tools considered essential for assembling Ikea Metod cabinets:
- Cordless drill with various bits, especially hex bits in the sizes used by Ikea
- Spirit level to accurately align all cabinets and prevent any tilting
- Drill with appropriate masonry or wood drill bits (depending on wall type) for wall mounting
- Hammer for installing or adjusting small parts (e.g., clips or anchors)
- Phillips screwdriver as a backup in case manual fine adjustments are needed
- Measuring tape to verify all dimensions correctly
Common beginner mistakes include installing the upper cabinets without sufficient use of a spirit level or not driving screws in deeply enough, which leads to unstable mounting. I also recommend setting the cordless drill to maximum speed and torque to avoid damaging the screws.
For those interested in more details: Ikea’s original tools are rather makeshift solutions. High-quality tools from a hardware store significantly make the assembly easier.

Hey everyone! 🙂 I just wanted to quickly share that I also struggled through the first meters with Metod kitchens – and honestly, the cordless drill is a real game changer! It saves so much time and the screws fit much more precisely!
Exactly that! At first, I only had the small Ikea hex key, but it drove me crazy. For me, an extension for the bits is also essential, especially when reaching the back areas of the cabinets. And don’t forget a good spirit level for mounting on the wall – nothing can be crooked, or the whole thing will come crashing down later!
Keep your chin up, Metod is demanding to assemble, but with the right tools it’s really fun!

From a professional perspective, the tools can be reduced to the absolute minimum essential for efficient and safe assembly of the Ikea Metod kitchen:
- Cordless drill/driver with hex bits sized 3.5 to 5 mm (depending on the screws used)
- Spirit level at least 60 cm (24 inches) long for precise alignment
- Drill, ideally with hammer function for solid walls
- Measuring tape at least 3 m (10 feet) long
- Rubber mallet for gentle fixing of cabinet parts
Reasoning: Ikea Metod cabinets are designed to be assembled with few special tools but require precise work. The small hex keys provided by Ikea are not suitable for extensive assembly, as they require too much force and work slowly.
In practice, a cordless drill with torque control has proven useful to avoid over-tightening screws. For wall mounting, use an appropriate drill with matching drill bits—for example, masonry bits for brick or concrete.
For comfort during assembly, I also recommend wearing work gloves, as edges and screw stubs can sometimes be sharp.
