Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe soon, but I don’t yet have all the necessary tools ready. Could someone please tell me exactly which tools are typically required for this type of assembly?

I have built several IKEA furniture pieces before, but the Hemnes series seems a bit more robust and complex in construction than, for example, the Kallax shelf. I want to make sure I have everything needed — from screwdrivers to possibly special bits or other accessories.

Any advice on whether it’s better to screw manually or use a power tool, and which tools are essential to have at home to avoid issues during assembly, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your tips!

The included Allen key set from IKEA is functional but often lacks stability and grip. For longer tasks, it is worth investing in your own solid Allen key set, which also helps reduce muscle fatigue.

I highly recommend an electric cordless drill-driver, as it allows screws to be inserted more quickly and consistently. It is important, however, to set the torque correctly to avoid over-tightening the screws.

Allen wrenches from IKEA are fine but not suitable for frequent users. If you are assembling the Hemnes only once, they are more than enough. A cordless drill driver is convenient but not essential.

It would be helpful to know if the included Allen key set from IKEA is really sufficient or if I should invest in better quality tools.

The IKEA tool is basically fine for occasional use. However, if you plan to assemble furniture more often or do more DIY work, I recommend a high-quality set in metric sizes. It’s simply more efficient and easier on your wrists.

And whether it’s really advisable to use a power tool like a cordless drill for assembling the Hemnes furniture, or if it’s better to screw everything by hand?

Here’s my take:

- A cordless drill makes torque control easier and saves a lot of time
- You should take some time to set the correct torque—too much force can damage the wood
- For beginners: it’s often better to pre-drill screws carefully or start screwing by hand, then finish with the drill

Quick tip: Use high-quality bits with a magnetic feature; this helps keep the screw securely on the bit.

Thank you for the helpful information! Based on your recommendations, I decided to supplement the IKEA hex key set with a sturdier tool set. Also, I will make sure to use a cordless drill with a lower torque setting and start by hand-threading the screws lightly.

One more question: what about side cutters or a utility knife? Do I need these tools for assembling the Hemnes, for example, to cut straps, films, or similar materials, or is a regular knife sufficient? I want to complete my tool list as thoroughly as possible.

Side cutters or utility knives are not necessarily required. A sturdy carpet knife or a sharp pocket knife is usually sufficient to open packaging. For cutting, you generally do not need such tools.

Great that you’re approaching this so thoroughly! For assembling Hemnes, I only used a Phillips screwdriver, an Allen key, and a hammer, but a utility knife is really handy for opening the packaging.

I can only confirm as well: using a cordless drill makes the process much faster! Just be careful the first time – I underestimated this too – it’s better to insert the screw first, then tighten it. Good luck, it’ll definitely turn out great!
