selubarHello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture made from solid pine wood and want to take proper care of it to keep it looking good for a long time. I’m unsure which maintenance products are best suited for this specific type of wood. Is it okay to use oils, waxes, or special wood care creams? Are there particular ingredients that should be avoided on Hemnes wood to prevent damage or discoloration? I would appreciate tips for effective and safe care, preferably with recommendations for specific products or instructions on how to apply them. Thanks in advance!
For optimal care of IKEA Hemnes wood, I recommend a combination of careful cleaning followed by treatment with natural-based products. Hemnes is made from lacquered or oiled pine wood, so the choice of care depends on the specific finish.
In general:
- For lacquered surfaces, use a mild dish soap and a damp, soft cloth. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners!
- For untreated or oiled parts, a clear wood oil is recommended, as it penetrates deeply into the pores and protects the wood.
Waxes provide an additional protective layer but may bead up or cause blotchy spots on oiled surfaces if not applied correctly.
Please first check whether your Hemnes furniture is oiled or lacquered. If you are unsure, it helps to test a care product on an inconspicuous area.
I am interested in how you acquired the piece: new or used, and which surface treatment it currently has. This helps to recommend the right care more precisely.

Would you still recommend using furniture polish, or is something else better? I want to avoid build-up from polish over time or the wood losing its natural character.

Also, especially if the paint layer is thin, an overly aggressive polish can damage the protective coating.
I wonder why IKEA does not provide more detailed care instructions — in my opinion, that would be helpful to prevent user mistakes.
Perhaps you should opt for a pH-neutral soap solution for cleaning, followed by using a dry, microfibre cloth to gently remove dust and light dirt.
