ᐅ What tools are needed for the IKEA Hemnes assembly and modification?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning a modification of my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to be as well prepared as possible. My specific question is: which tools are really necessary to carry out the modification efficiently and without major issues? This involves not only disassembling and reassembling the wardrobe but also possible adjustments like shortening parts or modifying the shelves. I have some experience using screwdrivers and cordless drills, but I’m unsure if I also need, for example, a jigsaw or other power tools. Perhaps someone here has done similar modifications and can recommend a list of the essential tools, including a description of what each tool is used for?

This list covers both assembly and necessary adjustments without requiring any unnecessary tools.

Thank you, that sounds very reasonable. Would the doors on the Hemnes actually need to be sanded if you only shorten them vertically? Or is a precise cut sufficient? I want to avoid visible damage to the surfaces during the adjustment.

A precise cut with a fine jigsaw blade is usually sufficient if you use the correct saw blade. It is recommended to use a fine blade with as many teeth per inch as possible to minimize surface splintering. A light sanding with very fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher) smooths the cut and ensures a clean edge that is barely visible. Sanding is therefore only minimally necessary and mainly serves for finishing touches.

For trimming, use a sharp jigsaw with a fine blade and work patiently. Resanding works well if you are careful.

Thank you very much for that! And what about the screws? Are the original IKEA screws sufficient when reassembling and adjusting the cabinet? Or would it be better to use stronger screws or alternative materials?

That’s a good question, Carolina. I have personally modified a Hemnes before and found the original screws to be perfectly sufficient in most cases, especially if you’re only making minor adjustments and not completely redesigning the cabinet. For heavier loads (e.g., adding extra shelves or modifying the structure), it can be worthwhile to use slightly longer or thicker screws. However, please make sure the screws aren’t too thick to avoid damaging the wood.

Very important! If you customize the cabinet, you should use the existing drill holes and avoid creating new ones, as this could compromise stability. I also always recommend tightening screws by hand with a screwdriver to have more control than when using a cordless drill. This protects the material and ensures better hold.
