Hello everyone,

Lately, I have noticed small, sometimes slightly shiny, almost magical-looking spots or dots on the surface of my IKEA BILLY shelves, which I can’t quite explain. The surfaces are melamine-coated, which should actually be quite durable. I am particularly interested in what can be done when such spots appear on BILLY surfaces: Are there suitable cleaning products that can safely remove them? Are these spots more often a sign of damage or just dirt buildup? And most importantly: How can you prevent these spots from forming or remaining permanently visible?

I would prefer not to damage the material and am therefore looking for gentle but effective solutions. Maybe some of you have practical experience or helpful tips?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

For stains on BILLY surfaces, I usually just use a damp microfiber cloth and a mild dish soap. Do not rub; gently wipe instead. Avoid using aggressive cleaners, as the melamine could be damaged.

Yeah, that sounds like a good start! 🙂

I’ve tried tackling stubborn stains with regular all-purpose cleaners myself – but that often left the surface looking dull. It’s better to stick to the trusted combination of water and dish soap; patience is key here. If that still doesn’t do the trick, you can try a little rubbing alcohol, but be sure to test it discreetly in an inconspicuous spot first.

And of course, be gentle—BILLY is sturdy, but not a superhero when it comes to scratches!

A gentle approach is definitely the right way. The stains you describe can have various causes: slight adhesive residues, grease spots, or even microscopic damage to the melamine foil.

If a regular cleaner doesn’t help, I recommend using a special melamine cleaning sponge, often known as a "magic eraser," but it should be used very carefully. These can often reduce surface stains without damaging the coating.

Important: always test first on an inconspicuous area. Humidity and dust particles can also contribute to such stains, so regularly dust with a dry, soft brush.

Just a quick note regarding the recommendation to use rubbing alcohol: It would be helpful to know whether rubbing alcohol actually affects the durability of the BILLY melamine surface. Without reliable information, using it could potentially cause more harm than good in the long run.

Does anyone here have definitive experience with the resistance of BILLY surfaces to cleaning agents containing alcohol? Are there official care instructions from IKEA that should be taken seriously?

Also: A certain loss of gloss after cleaning doesn’t necessarily mean permanent damage. Let’s differentiate between surface changes and actual material damage.
