Hello everyone, I have a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and want to refasten some of the shelves. Unfortunately, I no longer have the original screws, and I’m not sure how to determine which screws are suitable for the BILLY bookshelf. Are there specific dimensions or types I should look for? Additionally, I’m interested in whether there are any particular features regarding the screws, such as length or thread type, that are important to ensure stability and correct assembly. Does anyone have practical advice on the best approach to finding the right screws?

Hello Jonbla50, your question is very understandable, and I’m happy to explain what you should consider when looking for suitable screws for the BILLY shelf. Generally, IKEA uses wood screws with metric threads for BILLY shelves, usually in sizes M4 or M5, depending on which parts need to be fastened. The length typically ranges between 30 and 50 millimeters (1.2 and 2 inches).

A good first step is to carefully measure the fastening points on a non-visible part, especially the hole diameter and depth, to find suitable screws. Also, pay attention to the type of screw head—usually a Phillips head—as this will make installation easier.

By the way, screws with a full thread are usually better suited for BILLY shelves because they provide better grip in the wood. If you plan to support the shelves on metal pins, you will need different screws than those used for the side panels. I hope this gives you a helpful overview!

Measure the diameters of the holes and the shelf depth, then buy M4 or M5 wood screws, approximately 35mm (1.4 inches) long, preferably Phillips head. Check whether you need full or partial thread.

Here is a brief summary of the best approach to finding screws for your BILLY shelf:

1. Measurement: Determine the screw diameter using a caliper (usually M4 or M5).
2. Screw length: Depends on the thickness of the wood material – for BILLY, the side panels are typically 16-18 mm (0.6-0.7 inches) thick, so 35-40 mm (1.4-1.6 inches) length is sufficient.
3. Thread type: Full thread provides better grip in the fiberboard, partial thread is less common.
4. Screw head: Phillips head, preferably flat head countersunk, so the screws sit flush.

Common mistakes I often see are screws that are too long and damage the back panel, or screws that are too short and don’t hold well enough. It’s best to check beforehand if you plan to reuse the back panel, as thinner screws are often needed for this.

If you like, I can also prepare a simple table with measurements and recommended screw lengths.

Good point! I definitely want to avoid damaging the back panel of my BILLY shelf. How can I determine the maximum screw length I should use? The shelf has a back panel made of thin particleboard. Is there a risk of piercing through the panel if I use screws that are too long? Also, what options are there for the shelves if I don’t have the original screws and can’t find the exact sizes?

First, regarding the back panel: IKEA uses a thin hardboard for the BILLY series, usually only about 3 mm (0.1 inch) thick. Because of this, it is very easy to damage or even completely drill through the back panel if the screws are too long.

Therefore, the screw length should be chosen so that they only penetrate the side panels without compromising the back panel.

A practical approach:

1. Measure the depth of the side panel from the front edge to the edge of the back panel – typically around 16-18 mm (0.6-0.7 inch).
2. Subtract about 3-5 mm (0.1-0.2 inch) to be safe, resulting in a maximum effective screw depth of 13-15 mm (0.5-0.6 inch).
3. Accordingly, select the screw length – the screw length minus the thickness of the shelf board (or the part you are attaching). For shelves, screws about 25-30 mm (1-1.2 inch) long are usually used.

If you do not have the original screws, you can ask for furniture screws (wood screws with countersunk heads, M4 or M5) at a well-stocked hardware store and check them with a thread gauge. For shelves, there are often special dowels combined with screws if you want to increase the stability of the shelf.

It is often worthwhile not only to pay attention to the screws but also to consider using shelf supports (pin systems) that make the shelf load-bearing without major drilling.

Are there any special features with your shelf regarding materials or construction? For example, are you using homemade shelves?
