Hello everyone, I recently bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to fasten them as securely as possible. I’m wondering: which types of screws are the most stable for BILLY?
I’ve read that there are differences between the original IKEA screws and alternatives from hardware stores, for example regarding material thickness and thread design. I’m particularly interested in whether it’s advisable to use other types of screws, such as particleboard screws, wood screws, or even metal screws, to improve load capacity and durability.
Can anyone share their experience about which screws really work best for the load-bearing capacity of this shelving unit? I want to avoid the shelves becoming unstable over time or the screws loosening. Thanks!

I fully understand how important it is for a shelf to remain stable and not require constant tightening. So far, I have only used the original screws for my BILLY shelves because I was always concerned that other screws might not fit exactly or could damage the material.
However, I often wonder if there are better options, especially when you want to load the shelf more heavily over the long term. Until now, I have never had any problems, and the shelf has remained stable.

Regarding the stability of a BILLY shelf unit, I can share the following: The original screws from IKEA are usually particleboard screws specifically designed for the type of chipboard material used.
This means they are actually well suited, as they have a thread profile that does not tear the material excessively but still provides good grip.
Alternatively, you can also use special particleboard screws from specialized retailers, which are often harder and more corrosion-resistant. Wood screws with coarser threads, on the other hand, can overload or split the chipboard material.
Be careful with metal screws: if they are too coarse or too hard, there is a risk of cracks or even fractures in the shelf.

In summary, the following can be concluded from a technical perspective:
The most stable screw types for BILLY shelves are specially designed chipboard screws, ideally with countersunk heads and fine threads, which embed optimally into the chipboard.
The original screws from IKEA are optimized for this purpose, especially regarding length and thread density.
Using screws that are too long or too coarse can cause material damage and even reduce stability.
When using replacement screws, I recommend high-quality chipboard screws with a hardened surface, such as galvanized or stainless steel, with a length of about 35-45 mm (1.4-1.8 inches), depending on the thickness of the shelf.
