Hello everyone, I have a few Billy shelves from IKEA at home and would like to enhance their appearance with color to better match my living room. It is important to me that the shelves are not damaged in the process, as I might want to use them again in their original condition or sell them later. Does anyone have tips or proven methods for changing the surface color of the shelves without affecting their stability or the material underneath? I am thinking of options like special stickers, films, spray paint, or other creative solutions that would leave no residue. I appreciate any ideas or experiences!

I would recommend using furniture foil. It adheres well and can be removed later without leaving any residue. It is important to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand.

Hello Claude, if you want to change the color of BILLY shelves without damaging them, there are several approaches. First, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the shelf surface, as dirt or grease can prevent adhesives and paint from sticking.

1. Furniture foil (vinyl wrap): You can cut this to size and apply it. Removing it usually does not cause any damage.

2. Spray paint with primer: There are special spray paints for MDF and lacquered surfaces. Use a primer to ensure the paint adheres. However, keep in mind that removal often is not residue-free.

3. Magnetic paint: If you’re feeling creative, you can apply magnetic paint to the surface and then attach a foil or chalkboard.

Summary: For residue-free results, foil is best. If you want a permanent color change, spray paint is possible, but removal may be problematic.

Residue-free removal works best with self-adhesive films specifically designed for furniture. I would only use spray paint if you do not intend to restore the shelf to its original color.

That’s brilliant, being able to upgrade shelves simply by using adhesive film! 🙂 I tried it myself, and it looks great—very unique and without the risk of damaging the shelves. Just clean the surface, cut the film to size, press it on, and you’re done! And if you feel like changing it, you can just peel it off again 🙂

Here is a brief guide on how to apply adhesive film to BILLY shelves, Claude:

1. Preparation: Thoroughly dust and degrease the surface using a mild cleaner.
2. Choosing the film: Select a high-quality furniture film designed specifically for smooth surfaces. Opt for solvent-free types to avoid damaging the material.
3. Cutting: Measure precisely and cut the film with a sharp utility knife.
4. Application: Slowly peel off the backing and smooth the film down with a squeegee or a firm cloth to prevent air bubbles.
5. Edges: Make sure to firmly press the film along the edges.

If needed, you can apply multiple layers or even cut out patterns. If you want to remove the film later, it should come off cleanly without residue, as long as you proceed carefully.
