ᐅ Why do the shelves of the BILLY unit sometimes not fit perfectly?

In some cases, they fit very tightly, in others rather loosely, or they have to be pushed in forcefully, which is uncomfortable and can damage the wood. I am wondering whether this is due to production inaccuracies, manufacturing tolerances, or perhaps material warping caused by moisture. That's a good point. I had stored the shelf in a rather humid room, so perhaps that affected the dimensional stability of the particleboard material. Are there any indications of how much moisture impacts the BILLY shelves, or are particularly moisture-resistant materials used there?

IKEA mainly uses particle boards with a melamine coating. These materials do react to moisture and can easily warp. Therefore, I recommend assembling and storing shelves in dry areas. This is quite important for ensuring a proper fit.

If dowels fit too tightly, lightly sanding them or slightly enlarging the drill holes often helps a lot.
