Are there BILLY shelves from IKEA that offer better moisture resistance than the standard models? My apartment occasionally experiences higher humidity levels, especially in the bathroom, so it would be useful if the shelf could last several years there without damage. I have read that the classic BILLY shelves are mainly made of particleboard and are not very resistant to moisture. Therefore, I am interested in whether there are special versions or treatments that compensate for this drawback, or if there are suitable alternatives within the BILLY range that are better suited for more humid environments.

There are no official moisture-resistant BILLY shelves from IKEA.Thank you for the quick response! Are there any solid wood models you mentioned? I only found the standard BILLY particleboard versions on IKEA’s website, but no solid wood option. Or are you referring to the BILLY series in general or other collections?

If you need better moisture resistance, you can consider alternatives like the VITTSJÖ series, which are made of metal and glass and are more resistant to moisture.
For wooden shelves, furniture made from hardwood or with special sealing for damp rooms is recommended – IKEA offers such furniture in other series, but not specifically within the BILLY range.

Additional to the discussion: If you prioritize moisture resistance in wooden shelves, you should look for shelves with HPL (High Pressure Laminate) surfaces. These finishes are highly resistant to moisture and abrasion.
The BILLY series does not have such surfaces. Particleboard swells when exposed to moisture, which causes warping and damage.
One solution I often recommend is to use the BILLY shelf in its original material but protect it with a waterproof coating (such as polyurethane varnish). For best results:
1. Sand the shelf completely, especially the cut edges.
2. Apply several coats of waterproof varnish.
3. Allow proper drying times between coats.
This can significantly extend the lifespan in more humid environments. Important: The ambient humidity should not be extremely high; otherwise, coatings will not provide long-term protection.
- Do you have specific humidity values for your location? That could be crucial.

The average humidity level in my bathroom is around 65–70%, sometimes rising to 75% during hot showers. That’s not extreme, but it lasts for a long time, which is a concern.
Can varnish treatment protect the shelves that well, or would it be better to choose different furniture? Maybe you have a recommendation for a type of varnish that works well?
It is understandable that you want a BILLY shelf in the bathroom, as it is flexible and affordable.
If painting is an option for you, I would start with a water-based varnish specialized for wood. Alternatively, there are marine varnishes that are particularly resistant to moisture, but these may affect the gloss or feel of the surface.
Important: After painting, shelves should be allowed to dry thoroughly, and the room itself should be well ventilated.
If you need a lot of storage but have limited space (e.g., metal shelves are narrower), you might also consider adding dehumidifiers. 🙂
