Hello everyone,

I plan to apply a protective lacquer to my IKEA Besta furniture to make the surface more resistant to scratches, liquids, and general wear. Since the Besta furniture is made of laminated wood-based material, I am wondering which types of protective lacquers are best suited for this, without dissolving the surface or causing unattractive changes.

My requirements are:
- UV protection to prevent color fading
- Scratch resistance
- Easy cleaning

Does anyone have experience with a specific type of lacquer (e.g., acrylic lacquer, polyurethane lacquer, water-based) or know of any brands that have worked particularly well? Also, what about the application process—are there any tips to ensure good adhesion and an even finish?

Thanks in advance for your tips and recommendations!

Hey! Such an interesting question, I really love this kind of topic! 😃 I treated my Besta furniture with a water-based acrylic lacquer that is specially designed for MDF and coated surfaces.

- It’s important that the lacquer is specifically approved for laminated or foil-covered surfaces, otherwise you might get bubbling or peeling.
- Also, I applied several thin layers and allowed each one to dry thoroughly.

The result is really great, looks amazing, and the scratch protection has improved significantly! I can only recommend it—just make sure to carefully check the manufacturer’s instructions before you start!

Thank you for posting this question! I was also unsure about this topic and was worried about damaging the surface of my Besta shelves.

Honestly, I’m concerned that some types of paint might affect the laminate or cause unsightly edges.

Are there any specific products that are explicitly recommended for this? Or is it better to paint only the exposed surfaces and avoid altering the laminated parts?

If anyone has experience with how paints hold up over time in this situation, I would be interested to hear about it as well.

Hello everyone,

to help with choosing a protective finish for IKEA Besta furniture, it is important to first understand the composition of the furniture.

The Besta shelves are mostly made from particleboard or MDF, coated with a melamine or foil surface. These surfaces are generally very sensitive to solvents. Therefore, I recommend:

- Use only water-based finishes, as they contain less aggressive solvents and will not damage the foil.
- Water-based acrylic paints or clear coats offer a good balance between protection and compatibility.
- Test on an inconspicuous spot before applying the finish completely!

In addition, applying the finish in several thin layers with sufficient drying time between coats is very important to maintain an even surface and ensure good adhesion.

Summary: Use water-based acrylic finish, observe drying times, and test beforehand.

I would like to add some advice on how to paint IKEA Besta furniture to achieve the best possible results:

1. Preparation:
- Thoroughly clean and degrease the surface to remove dust and grease.
- Lightly sand the laminate with very fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 320), being careful not to sand through it.

2. Paint selection:
- Water-based acrylic paints are essential, as they are transparent and do not react with the laminate surface.
- Solvent-based polyurethane (PU) paints are very durable but can cause issues on laminated surfaces.

3. Application:
- Apply several thin coats using a fine brush or, preferably, a spray gun.
- Allow each coat to dry completely, paying attention to temperature and humidity.

4. Post-treatment:
- Optionally, lightly sand between coats with very fine sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish.

A common mistake is applying coats that are too thick, which can lead to chipping. So it’s better to be patient!

Personally, I use a water-based, matte acrylic paint from a well-known brand and am very satisfied with the durability and appearance.

Some time ago, I used a water-based clear varnish on my Besta cabinets. Important: Do not apply directly to sticky or dusty surfaces. Clean thoroughly first and work dust-free.

After drying, the surfaces do not feel hard but remain slightly flexible, which helps prevent cracking.

My advice: Always test on a small area first to avoid any surprises.
