Hello everyone, I am considering furnishing my bathroom with Ikea Besta units, but I am unsure how to protect these units from the typical moisture found in bathrooms. Are there any tips or proven methods to prevent moisture damage such as swelling or warping of the Besta units? I am especially interested in practical advice on surface treatments or placement that could help avoid moisture damage in the long term.

It is best to apply a water-repellent sealant, then ventilate regularly. Do not place furniture directly on the floor, but keep it slightly elevated or use legs. Nothing more is needed.

A very important topic! Ikea Besta furniture is mostly made of particleboard and painted MDF components, which are naturally not water-resistant. To ensure long-lasting protection, I recommend the following steps:

- Treat surfaces with clear varnish or special furniture wax designed for damp areas, making sure all edges, including those on the inside and back panels, are coated.
- During assembly, make sure no gaps are left where water could penetrate.
- Place the furniture on legs at least 3–4 cm (1¼–1½ inches) high to avoid floor moisture.
- For extra protection, use a waterproof mat or sealing tape at contact points.

I’m curious: What is the average humidity level in your bathroom, and how is ventilation managed?

Thank you for the detailed response! The humidity naturally varies depending on how often the shower is used, usually ranging between 60-75%, which is somewhat controlled by an electric exhaust fan. Unfortunately, there are no windows, but the room is well insulated. I want to protect the furniture from consistently high moisture levels that rise quickly on hot days or after showers.

A good tip is to keep the doors of the Besta cabinets open when they are not in use. This allows better air circulation and helps moisture inside to evaporate more quickly.

Hey everyone! Great topic, I love these kinds of DIY projects. 🙂 I finished my Besta cabinets with clear varnish, which provides excellent protection! It’s also important to ventilate the bathroom well after showering and not to seal the furniture completely. Air needs to circulate, otherwise you’ll get mold! This has worked really well for us, no issues after 2 years.
