Hello everyone, I recently bought some Ikea Besta furniture and, with small children in the house, I want to make it as childproof as possible. However, it is very important to me that the appearance of the furniture is not affected – especially no visible locks or oversized latches that would spoil the clean look. My question to you is: What options are there to childproof Ikea BESTA furniture without compromising its appearance? Ideally, there should be discreet safety devices that still effectively prevent children from opening drawers or doors. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

The best child safety solution for Ikea BESTA furniture combines functionality with minimal impact on the design. In practice, I recommend the following options: - Magnetic safety locks that are installed inside the doors or drawers and can only be opened with a special key. These are completely invisible from the outside. - Self-adhesive locks for drawers, attached on the inside sides instead of being visible on the outside. - Use of foam seals on edges to prevent pinching and provide additional tactile cushioning. It is important to carry out the installation precisely to avoid altering gap measurements that could affect the furniture’s appearance.

That’s true, but honestly: isn’t it a bit paradoxical that we want to preserve the minimalist, elegant look of the furniture while at the same time “barricading” it? Nothing is as childproof as a room that the child simply is not allowed to enter. But that would be too easy.

Magnetic child safety locks are actually the best compromise. Hard to see, easy to remove, and the furniture maintains its appearance.

Thank you for the responses so far. The idea of magnetic locks sounds particularly promising, but does anyone know of specific models that fit especially well with Ikea BESTA? Also, how is the installation process? Do you need to drill holes that remain visible on the surface afterward, or is it completely invisible?

The installation of magnetic locks is usually done on the inside of the door or drawer, where small screws are used – yes, drilling is necessary. However, these holes are very small and discreet, so they are not visible from the outside. Some kits use self-adhesive options for wood, but their durability is lower. It is important to maintain the correct distance to the locking mechanism so that the magnet secures properly. Universal magnetic safety locks are suitable for Ikea BESTA units and can be found online or at specialty stores.
