Hello everyone, I am considering furnishing my bathroom with Ikea Besta units, but I am unsure how to protect these units from the typical moisture found in bathrooms. Are there any tips or proven methods to prevent moisture damage such as swelling or warping of the Besta units? I am especially interested in practical advice on surface treatments or placement that could help avoid moisture damage in the long term.

In addition to sealing, you can avoid direct contact with water by moving the furniture slightly away from the sink and shower. A waterproof cover plate on top also provides protection against condensation.

Air must get in, otherwise there will be mold!

Very important! Furniture needs to be able to breathe, which is often underestimated. A common mistake is sealing the exterior completely, which may seem protective but causes dampness inside. I also recommend regular inspections, especially on back panels and floor edges, where moisture tends to accumulate first.

You can also apply silicone sealant neatly in particularly exposed areas (e.g., the transition to the sink) to prevent water penetration. Afterward, the piece of furniture should be treated with breathable paint or varnish.

In addition to the ideas mentioned, I would like to highlight the following details:

- The material of the Besta furniture is generally not water-resistant, so protective treatment can only delay, but not prevent, damage caused by prolonged high humidity.
- To minimize moisture damage over the long term, it is important to ensure good air circulation behind and underneath the furniture, for example, using spacers at the back or small ventilation grilles.
- For wet rooms, there are also special moisture-resistant paints or impregnations that can be applied additionally.
- Preventing standing water around the feet is essential. Furniture spikes or rubber feet can help with this.

The bathroom is used several times daily by two people, usually with intervals of 4-6 hours between showers. The humidity level remains noticeably elevated for about 1-2 hours after showering, which is quickly reduced by the ventilation system. Thanks for the tips; I will especially pay attention to sealing, good ventilation, and keeping a distance from the floor.
