Hello everyone,

Over the past few weeks, I have purchased several Ikea Besta furniture pieces and would now like to know how to care for and clean them in the gentlest way possible.

I am particularly interested in the following points:
- Which cleaning products are suitable for the surfaces, especially for the foil-covered and high-gloss fronts?
- Are there any special care tips to avoid scratches or dull spots?
- How often should the furniture be cleaned without damaging the surface?
- Are there any environmental factors to avoid, for example when placing the furniture near heaters or windows?

I look forward to detailed tips, personal experiences, and especially advice on how to keep this furniture looking good in the long term. Thanks in advance to everyone with knowledge on this topic!

Hey sufra,

first of all, congratulations on the BESTA furniture! They are really stylish and quite practical. 😎

I usually clean mine with a slightly damp cloth and occasionally some mild dish soap to remove stubborn dirt. I make sure not to use too much water to prevent the edges from swelling.

And very important: no harsh abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, as they can easily leave unpleasant scratches. For high-gloss surfaces, I like to use a microfiber cloth that smooths them without streaks.

This way, the surfaces stay fresh longer without becoming dull. Good luck with the care!

Hello sufra,

I’d like to offer you a brief guide on how to gently care for your Ikea BESTA furniture:

1. Cleaning:
- Use lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- A soft, lint-free cloth is ideal.
- Wipe gently along the grain or surface texture.

2. Drying:
- Immediately follow cleaning by wiping with a dry, soft cloth.
- This helps prevent water marks and swelling.

3. Special care:
- For high-gloss fronts, there are special furniture polishes available, but use them sparingly — preferably test first on an inconspicuous area.

4. Avoiding damage:
- Do not place the furniture directly next to radiators or in direct sunlight.
- Avoid harsh cleaners containing ammonia or bleach.
- Do not use abrasive sponges.

Summary:
- Cleaning: mild and gentle
- Drying: immediate
- Placement: protected from heat and UV

This way your BESTA furniture stays well protected and retains its charm for longer.

This is the most important point. In addition to cleaning, I would like to add that Ikea BESTA furniture usually has painted or laminated surfaces. Therefore, mechanical stress should be strictly avoided.

Besides mild water and dish soap, please consider the following:
- Do not use solvents or alcohol-based cleaners, as they can damage the surface.
- For matte finishes, dusting with a dry microfiber cloth is often sufficient.
- For heavier dirt, moisten briefly but do not leave wet cloths on the surface.

Regular care with gentle cleaning is better than intensive mechanical cleaning at longer intervals.

I would like to add that the surfaces of Ikea BESTA furniture are technically made of melamine resin-coated particleboard in most cases. This affects their maintenance:

- Melamine resin is resistant to water but not to strong alkalis or acids.
- Therefore, strongly alkaline cleaners or acidic solvents should never be used.
- Micro-scratches appear quickly if using abrasive sponges.

A special tip to protect against scratches:
- For high-gloss fronts, I use a special soft microfiber polishing cloth that removes very fine abrasive particles and smooths the surface.

Regarding placement:
- Heat sources like radiators should be at least 50 cm (20 inches) away.
- Direct sunlight during the day can cause colors to fade.

Finally, I recommend responding to stains immediately and not waiting too long, as dirt can otherwise become embedded in the plastic laminate.

Simply wipe regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stains, use lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap, then dry thoroughly. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, this is completely sufficient.
