Hello everyone,

I want to customize my Ikea Besta furniture with lacquer paint according to my own ideas and am looking for recommendations and tips on the best way to do this. Specifically, I am interested in the following aspects:

- What preparation materials are useful to optimally prepare the surfaces for lacquer paint?
- Are there special lacquer paints that work particularly well for Besta furniture?
- What techniques should I keep in mind when painting to achieve a durable and attractive result?
- If possible, I would also appreciate advice on the necessary work processes, tools, and potential sources of error.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Pascalla,

Very good and detailed question! For painting Ikea Besta furniture, I recommend first sanding the surfaces thoroughly – this helps the paint adhere better. It’s best to use sandpaper with a grit of 180-220 to slightly roughen the surface.

Next, you should apply a primer specifically designed for smooth or melamine-coated surfaces – this prevents the paint from peeling later on.

When choosing the paint, look for water-based acrylic paints or special furniture paints suitable for MDF and similar materials.

For the actual painting, I recommend using a good foam roller or a high-quality brush to avoid streaks. Sand lightly between coats (around 320 grit sandpaper), then apply additional layers of paint.

Regarding safety: ensure good ventilation and use gloves.

Best regards!

Pascalla, sand the surfaces well, then apply a primer, followed by several coats of paint. Use paint suitable for wood/MDF. Use a good quality roller or brush. Done.

Hello Pascalla,

I can recommend a very detailed procedure to permanently and professionally paint your Ikea Besta furniture with lacquer. Make sure to allocate enough time to carefully complete each step, as poor preparation can cause significant durability issues.

First step: Cleaning
- Degrease thoroughly, for example with thinner or isopropanol, especially on melamine resin coated surfaces.

Second step: Sanding
- Besta furniture usually consists of melamine-coated panels, which are very smooth.
- Lightly sand one or two times with 320-grit sandpaper to improve the surface adhesion.

Third step: Priming
- Use a suitable adhesion primer for plastics/melamine. Ensure compatibility with the final topcoat, e.g., acrylic-based.
- Depending on the product, apply one or multiple coats and lightly sand in between with 400-grit sandpaper.

Fourth step: Painting
- Water-based acrylic lacquers are ideal because they have low odor and are durable.
- Use a high-quality foam roller for smooth, even application or a premium fan brush.
- Apply several thin coats, allowing each to dry well.

Tips on common pitfalls:
- Insufficient sanding leads to flaking.
- Too thick paint layers cause runs.
- Impatience during drying times results in an uneven finish.

I would also like to know what exact final result you expect and how much experience you have with painting work? This will help me assist you more specifically.

Thanks in advance for the helpful tips!

@kulau: I prefer the furniture to have a matte finish rather than glossy. My previous experience with painting is quite limited; so far, I have only painted smaller wood projects, mainly focusing on wood priming.

Also, I would like to color the doors and fronts if possible, while keeping the carcass more classic white or black. Is the same technique suitable for that? Or should I do something different for colored surfaces?

Looking forward to tips on achieving a matte finish and on painting, especially for the Besta doors.

Hello Pascalla,

Regarding your request for a matte finish and colored fronts: the basic approach remains the same, but there are a few important details to consider.

1. Color Choice and Finish:
- For matte surfaces, an acrylic or acrylic lacquer with a matte sheen is recommended.
- Make sure that the primer and topcoat are compatible, ideally from the same product line.

2. Colored Painted Fronts:
- Since doors and fronts are subject to more wear and possible cleaning, I suggest using a harder, more durable paint, such as two-component (2K) coatings, which require careful handling and some experience.
- Alternatively, you can use high-quality alkyd paints, which are more robust than simple acrylic lacquers.

3. Preparation:
- The preparation methods described by Tradi and kulau are exactly right.
- It is especially important to thoroughly degrease smooth surfaces to ensure good paint adhesion.

4. Tools and Application Methods:
- For matte paints, brushing or spraying is often preferred, as rollers can sometimes leave small textures.
- Pay attention to applying even coats and allowing sufficient drying time.

5. Painting Environment:
- Choose a dust-free, well-ventilated area.
- Maintain moderate temperature and humidity levels to ensure optimal drying.

My advice: If you are not comfortable working with 2K coatings, stick to high-quality acrylics with a matte finish and optimize preparation and layering carefully.

Have you already considered a specific manufacturer or type of paint?
