Good morning everyone,

I recently bought some Ikea Besta furniture that I would like to enhance with a durable and visually appealing paint finish. I am looking for paint types that not only adhere well but are also scratch-resistant and moisture-resistant, as the furniture will be placed partly in the living room and partly in slightly more humid areas.

My specific questions:
- Which paint types (brands / variants) are especially suitable for Besta furniture made of MDF and wood fiberboard?
- Are there any special pretreatments or primers that help the paint last longer?
- Which type of paint (e.g., acrylic paint, polyurethane paint, alkyd paint) do you recommend based on your experience?
- What is the best approach to achieve a smooth and durable finish?

I look forward to your combined expertise and tips, especially regarding which paints have made your furniture look great and last long.

Thank you in advance!

For Besta furniture, I recommend water-based acrylic paint. It has low odor and adheres well. Be sure to treat it first with a primer and lightly sand it. Also important: apply several thin layers.

Hello Gumau4,

I think your question is very well thought out! For Ikea Besta, which often consists of melamine-coated boards or MDF, I recommend the following steps:

- First, lightly sand (grit 220-320) so that the surface becomes rough and the paint adheres better.
- Use a primer specifically designed for plastics or melamine-coated furniture.
- Regarding the type of paint: acrylic paints are advisable because they are water-based and contain fewer solvents, making them better for the environment and health.

PU (polyurethane) paints are more durable but also more demanding to use (odor, application). I have had good experiences with acrylic paint myself – the finish is high quality and the colors last a long time.

It is important to let the paint dry thoroughly and to apply several thin layers rather than one thick layer.

In short: Acrylic paint on a well-prepared surface. Always sand lightly between coats and apply thin layers. For extra durability, seal the paint with a clear coat.

I want to go into a bit more detail because IKEA Besta furniture often has smooth surfaces that are difficult to work with.

1. Preparation:
- Cleaning and degreasing the surface is essential. Light sanding with fine sandpaper (grit around 320) improves adhesion.

2. Primer:
- Use an adhesion primer specifically designed for hard-to-bond surfaces (melamine, MDF). This is the foundation for a durable paint layer.

3. Paint selection:
- Water-based acrylic paint offers many advantages: low odor, fast drying, flexible, and weather-resistant.
- PU paints (polyurethane) are very resistant to scratches and chemicals, but have a strong odor, require more preparation, and longer drying times.

4. Application:
- Multiple thin layers with light sanding in between make the finish especially smooth.
- Finally, a clear coat can be applied to provide additional surface protection.

Common mistakes:
- Applying layers that are too thick, causing long drying times and possible cracking or peeling.
- Skipping the primer, which leads to peeling.

Conclusion: For DIY enthusiasts, I recommend water-based acrylic paint with an adhesion primer, while PU paint may be a better choice for professionals with higher demands—depending on the effort and location of the furniture.

Good summary, jelite. Additional points:

- The surface texture of Besta furniture (partially melamine-coated) makes adhesion more difficult.
- Therefore, using adhesion promoters (e.g., special primers) is crucial.
- Acrylic paint is UV-resistant, which is an advantage for furniture in the living room.
- PU (polyurethane) paint offers better durability against mechanical stress, ideal for homes with children or frequent use.

Recommendation: primer + acrylic paint as a base, with an optional matte clear coat for additional protection if needed.
