Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation in my apartment and want to redesign my IKEA Besta furniture as flexibly as possible. My question is: How can IKEA Besta furniture be easily modified during renovations, especially when it comes to changing dimensions, adding or removing components, and integrating them into new room layouts? Are there any proven techniques, accessories, or tools that make the modification easier without having to buy completely new furniture? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Use the original door sizes and expand the individual modules with trims or insert intermediate strips Exactly, that matches my experience as well. A small tip: for trims and cover strips, you can use simple MDF panels and paint them white, which matches very well with the IKEA colors.
If you want to be very precise, you can also use trims made from aluminum profiles; these provide extra stability and a modern look.
For those planning to modify a suggested furniture corner, corner joints can be reinforced with brackets to keep everything stable during transport or remodeling.
I understand that modifying IKEA Besta furniture can be stressful, especially if you don’t have a carpenter at home. I myself faced some initial difficulties when trying out the first adjustments. The important thing is not to get overwhelmed by the idea of being “perfect” right away. Small inaccuracies usually go unnoticed when you assemble the furniture with some care and patience.
Even if the fronts don’t fit perfectly, you can achieve a lot through smart color adjustments or decorations. In the end, it’s a process, and each step improves when approached with realistic expectations.

IKEA uses standardized modules, and their system is designed for simple assembly, not for flexible, professional custom furniture construction. If you really want flexibility, custom-built furniture is the better choice – it will save you trouble in the long run.
On the other hand, you can of course improvise, but the result is often a compromise rather than a truly tailored solution. The best “easy” approach is to plan cleverly how to combine the existing modules and make only minimal cuts.

IKEA offers standardized modules, and the system is designed for easy assembly rather than flexible, professional furniture construction. That is true, but the modular nature of BESTÅ actually allows for creative use of shelves, drawers, and doors. For minor adjustments like room dividers or changing the basic dimensions, it is quite possible to achieve good results with simple tools and some skill.
I believe Kinpar9’s question also aims at making the most of the system within the cost-benefit framework. You just need to understand which parts can be effectively modified and which are better replaced with new ones. Ultimately, careful planning determines the success.
Thank you all for the helpful contributions! To summarize, I have understood that:
- Original fittings should be preserved as much as possible and reused carefully,
- Doors are better not trimmed but rather supplemented with trims or standard fronts,
- Back panels made of plywood or MDF can be cut to size effectively,
- Avoiding tension when screwing is important,
- And that planning is essential.
I will follow the advice about avoiding overtightening screws and using trims. The practical approach also reassures me a lot. It gives me confidence to adapt my BESTA furniture to fit the renovation without having to buy new ones right away. Thanks again!
