Hello everyone,
I am currently looking more closely into IKEA furniture, specifically the BILLY bookcase series. Since I am searching for particularly sturdy and durable models that can withstand heavy daily use, I wanted to ask in this forum which BILLY models you consider to be especially resilient.
I am interested in both the use of different materials, such as solid wood or particleboard, as well as the design and construction of the shelves. Perhaps someone has long-term experience or comparisons between the variants (e.g., depth, width, versions with or without glass doors).
I am also looking for tips on optimal care and possible reinforcements that could extend their longevity.
So, which BILLY models are especially robust and durable? Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

Hello Jacques,
I can tell you that the classic BILLY shelves with 80cm (31.5 inches) width and 28cm (11 inches) depth are the most stable. The taller versions without doors often feel wobbly. If you want something very sturdy, go for the ones with glass doors – they are a bit more stable because of the door frames.

Briefly regarding the material: The BILLY shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating; this is not solid wood but rather MDF or compressed wood.
For greater stability, I recommend securing them to the wall – this significantly improves their durability.

Hello Jacques,
I would like to address your question in more detail, as the topic of durability and longevity with BILLY actually involves several aspects.
The BILLY series is generally designed for moderate use and primarily uses particleboard with foil or melamine coating. The models measuring 80x28x202 cm (width x depth x height) are considered standard and are stable when assembled correctly. Stability here depends heavily on wall mounting.
For frequently used or heavily loaded shelves, I recommend models with additional back panel reinforcement or versions with glass doors, as these make the structure stiffer. The doors provide more stability to the furniture and protect the contents from dust.
The configuration is also important: shelves that are too tall and wide at the same time can be more prone to wobbling. A combination of several smaller units can be more stable.
Finally, a tip to always use the fastening elements provided by IKEA for this purpose—this makes a big difference, especially with taller models.
I hope this helps!

Does the frame of the glass doors also apply to the narrower BILLY shelves? Or is there a specific model that is particularly suitable for stable storage?

Hey Jacques,
I have been using the BILLY 40x28x202 cm (16x11x79 inches) with glass doors for 6 years now, and it’s holding up great! 🙂
Even without attaching it to the wall, it’s really stable because the doors act a bit like bracing.
What worked really well are those small sticky pads or furniture gliders under the feet to prevent tipping or slipping.
The only important thing is not to overload or unevenly load the shelf, otherwise it can wobble. But with reasonable use, you can enjoy it for a long time! :-)
