Are there BILLY shelves from IKEA that offer better moisture resistance than the standard models? My apartment occasionally experiences higher humidity levels, especially in the bathroom, so it would be useful if the shelf could last several years there without damage. I have read that the classic BILLY shelves are mainly made of particleboard and are not very resistant to moisture. Therefore, I am interested in whether there are special versions or treatments that compensate for this drawback, or if there are suitable alternatives within the BILLY range that are better suited for more humid environments.

If you need a lot of storage but have limited space (e.g., metal shelves are narrower), you might also consider adding dehumidifiers. 🙂

Good tip, thanks! Unfortunately, the bathroom is very small, so a narrower metal shelf with full moisture resistance might be more practical.

I’m still curious if anyone has personal experience using a BILLY shelf in the bathroom over a longer period, with or without sealing? Are there any insights on how long such shelves generally last without issues?

From my experience and numerous reports from acquaintances:

- Untreated BILLY shelves in humid rooms show signs of damage within a few months up to 2 years, especially on the cut edges.
- Applying a sealant (paint, clear varnish) can extend their lifespan to 3–5 years.
- The requirements are good ventilation, no direct contact with water splashes, and regular inspection.

Those who want to be on the safe side should consider alternatives or use a dehumidifier to prevent damage.

Regarding the durability of BILLY shelves in increased humidity:

Reviews from many users as well as tests show clear weaknesses when used in damp environments. The particleboard absorbs moisture, swells, and causes joints to come apart.

These effects first appear in exposed areas such as shelves, edges, and dowel holes.

Shelves that are treated afterward have better chances, but this is not a guarantee.

My advice: for long-lasting stable furniture in more humid areas, choose moisture-resistant materials.

In conclusion, I would like to point out potential sources of moisture that are outside the shelf itself but significantly affect its durability.

1. Control indoor humidity (window ventilation, fans, dehumidifiers).
2. Avoid direct contact with water (prevent splashing when showering).
3. Always leave a small gap between furniture and the wall to prevent trapped moisture.

If these measures are followed, you will have a much better chance of using your BILLY shelf long-term, even after repainting.

If the shelves are not specially treated, I generally advise against using them in bathrooms.
