Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from Ikea placed in front of windows that receive strong sunlight all day long. I’ve noticed that the white surface of the shelves is gradually yellowing despite the good coating, and some edges are also slightly fading. Therefore, my question is: What practical and gentle methods are available to effectively protect Billy shelves from UV exposure?
I am particularly interested in whether there are specific UV-protective coatings or films that can be applied without damaging the surface or negatively affecting the appearance. Any advice on possible protective coverings or repositioning would also be helpful.
Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences.

Hello Iankar,
when it comes to UV protection for furniture surfaces like Billy shelves, special UV-resistant coatings are generally an option. However, these often contain solvents that can cause discoloration on veneer or wood fiber materials, such as those used in Billy.
A commonly proven alternative is applying high-quality UV protection films to the surfaces, provided the film is transparent and suitable for furniture. These films block about 98% of UV radiation and hardly change the appearance of the surface. It is important to choose a film that can be removed cleanly without leaving any residue.
Another approach is installing solar control glazing on the windows or adding additional blinds to minimize UV exposure and thus protect the furniture over the long term.

Hello everyone,
adding to roryvin’s comment: A light but effective mechanical protection is UV-blocking curtains or special venetian blinds that significantly reduce direct sunlight exposure.
If direct contact between the film and the shelving is not desired, a thin plexiglass panel with UV protection can also be installed in front. This also provides protection and is easy to replace.
I would definitely avoid using aggressive paints without sufficient testing on the specific shelving surface, as this can cause stains or damage.

Mechanical protection includes UV-blocking curtains or special venetian blind slatsUnfortunately, blinds are not an option for me since the room needs to stay bright. I’m looking for a solution directly on the shelving unit.

Apply UV protective film. This raises the question for me: Are there protective films specifically designed for furniture? Some window tint films for cars can be quite harsh, which I want to avoid.

cassandra22 Jul 2023 12:01There are special transparent UV protection films specifically designed for interior applications on furniture surfaces. These are often found in home improvement stores under names like "indoor blinds with UV protection" or "furniture-friendly protective film."
It is important to choose a film with a high UV blocking rate (at least 90%) and a mineral-based composition, as this type does not contain chemical plasticizers that could damage furniture.
Before applying the film, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned. To be sure, you should first test the film on an inconspicuous corner.
Additionally, it is important to ensure that the films do not cause any noticeable light distortion, such as color changes.
