Hello everyone,

I have a question about cleaning my Billy shelves from IKEA. Over time, different types of stubborn dirt have accumulated, especially stains from dried liquids and dust that has really settled in.

I have already tried regular cleaning wipes and mild dish soap, but that is not enough to get the surfaces properly clean without worrying about damaging the material.

How can I effectively clean Billy shelves with stubborn dirt so that the shelves don’t get damaged and the paint or surface stays intact as much as possible? Are there any special cleaning products or techniques you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello BIMIN,

For stubborn dirt on Billy shelves, I would generally advise against using aggressive cleaners, as the surface is made of laminate and can be easily damaged. A proven method is to use a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a mild all-purpose cleaner or a mixture of water and a small amount of dish soap.

If that is not enough, a sponge with a very fine, non-scratching surface can help, for example a melamine sponge (like a so-called magic eraser), but use it very carefully and only on small spots. Afterwards, wipe with clean water and dry thoroughly.

It is important to avoid sharp solvents or abrasive cleaners to prevent damage to the surface.

The following method has proven to be particularly effective in my experience: first, remove loose dirt with a dust cloth or vacuum cleaner. For dried stains, prepare a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water. Treat the area with a soft cloth, let it sit for about 5 minutes, then gently rub.

Vinegar acts as a mild solvent and is gentle on the surface. Afterwards, wipe with clean water to remove any vinegar residues. For more stubborn spots, the treatment can be repeated.

Always proceed carefully to avoid damaging the film surface.

That sounds like a really good tip! 🙂 I personally sometimes just use lukewarm water with a splash of dish soap – that usually gets the shelves sparkling clean again.

Another little tip from me: If the dirt is really stubborn, a small toothbrush (with soft bristles) can be great for cleaning corners and edges. Just don’t scrub too hard, or the surface might start to fuzz.

Honestly, I find these “gentle methods” often a waste of time when dealing with stubborn dirt.

Why not just use a bit of spirit or alcohol to help? The surface of the Billy shelves is quite durable. I’ve always had good experiences with this and never seen any damage.

Of course, you should wipe the surface well afterward, but I think the fear of damage is somewhat exaggerated.

What do you think?

Why not just help a little with some denatured alcohol or alcohol?

This is a common point that needs to be considered carefully. Alcohol-based cleaners can indeed be effective, but denatured alcohol dissolves and degreases the surface, which can cause unwanted damage to older or less durable films.

Therefore, I always recommend testing first on a concealed area before applying alcohol over a larger surface.
