Hello everyone,

I am planning to securely fix several Billy shelves to the tiled floors in my living room because they tend to be a bit unstable on the smooth surface, and I am concerned about safety, especially with young children in the house. My question is: what is the best and most permanent way to stabilize Billy shelves on tiled floors without damaging the tiles? For example, I know of possible solutions using adhesives, screws, or special sliding or anti-slip mats, but I am unsure what is recommended for tiled floors. Are there proven methods or maybe even special tools or fasteners you would recommend? Thanks in advance for your help!

To securely fix Billy shelves on tiled floors, I recommend a combination of non-slip materials and, if possible, indirect fastening to the wall. Directly screwing into tiles without appropriate anchors can cause damage and is best avoided if drilling is not an option.

The following approach has proven effective:

1. Use silicone-free anti-slip mats under the shelf feet to prevent slipping.
2. For wall attachment, use shelf brackets or angle brackets anchored with wall plugs (anchors) to keep the shelves stable without damaging the floor.
3. If needed, furniture connectors can be used to join multiple shelves together, which increases stability.

This method avoids unnecessary drill holes in the tiles and improves overall stability.

That’s a good approach, but I would add some details to ensure long-term stability.

First, the tile surface should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased before applying anti-slip mats, as even small dust particles can reduce slip resistance.

For floor attachment itself, there are special adhesive tapes with very strong bonding on smooth surfaces, such as double-sided PU adhesive tape, which can be removed without residue but still provides a firm hold. These can be attached under the feet to minimize wobbling.

Another option is adjustable anti-slip feet or floor leveling screws to compensate for uneven flooring.

If drilling is acceptable, I recommend using tile drill bits at the lowest speed to avoid damage. Afterwards, fishnet anchors can be used, which offer good support in hollow spaces or tile joints.

It is important that all fixings distribute the load evenly to avoid putting stress on individual tiles.

Simply place anti-slip pads under the shelf feet and secure the shelves to the wall using brackets. Avoid drilling into tiles, as they can easily crack.

A stable solution is to attach shelf anchors to the wall, ideally to solid walls, combined with non-slip rubber pads under the shelf feet to minimize movement. This protects the tiled floor and ensures safety. Avoid direct fastenings to the floor at all costs.

I find it interesting that almost everyone here instinctively talks about fastening to the wall and using anti-slip mats, but hardly anyone addresses the actually simple question of how to stabilize furniture directly on the tiled floor without much effort. Why not modify the shelves themselves a bit, for example by adding extra crossbars at the bottom or sides? Instead of using methods that could potentially damage the tiles, you could increase the stability of the shelving unit—then the floor becomes almost irrelevant. This also avoids drilling and adhesives.

Always wanting to screw everything into the wall isn’t always practical or desired. A different approach would make sense.
