Hello everyone, I am planning to set up several Billy bookcases in my apartment on carpeted floors and want to make sure they stand stable and secure there. My main concern is that the bookcases might wobble or tip over on the carpet, especially when taking something out or putting something in. Are there any proven methods or special tricks to securely fasten or stabilize the Billy bookcases on carpeted floors? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!
Hello EILEEN, it’s great that you are focusing on stability! 🙂 Shelves can indeed be a bit wobbly on carpeted floors, but I’ve had excellent results using small anti-slip mats under the shelf feet. Just cut them to size, place them underneath, and suddenly the shelf stands rock solid! Wall fastenings are also my recommendation; it doesn’t get much safer than that! 🙂 Good luck, and let us know how it goes for you!
Hello EILEEN, I’m happy to help you with your project. When it comes to carpeted floors, it is especially important to ensure that the load distribution is as even as possible. One option is to place wooden or plastic boards under the feet of the Billy shelves to create a larger contact area. This prevents the feet from sinking in and makes the shelf more stable. Additionally, I strongly recommend using the wall anchors supplied by Ikea to prevent tipping. Sometimes, a thicker non-slip pad from a hardware store can also help. If you have more details about the carpet’s weight, I can provide more specific advice.
Thanks for the initial tips! I wanted to add that the carpet is relatively thick with a high pile, probably around 1.5 cm (0.6 inches). I'm unsure whether standard rubber underlays are really sufficient or if I should use something else. Also, the floor underneath is hardwood, so I don't want to use nails or anything similar directly into the floor. Are there alternative wall fixings or ways to securely attach the shelving feet without damaging the carpet?
Hello EILEEN, I understand your concern about the thick carpet. The issue often is that the shelving unit tends to “move” when there’s no hard surface underneath and the carpet compresses. One solution could be to use thin plywood sheets as a base under the shelf feet. This way, you distribute the weight better and create a stable standing surface.
Regarding wall mounting: I once saw a special clamping method that holds without screws in the floor. It might be worth asking a specialist retailer about that.
Your concern about the hardwood floor is also important – if you don’t want to damage the flooring, you definitely need to be careful.
