MaiasuHello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought the Ikea Brimnes furniture (a combination of wood fiberboard and a coated surface), but I’m currently a bit uncertain about how to clean the surface properly without damaging it. Since the Brimnes often has a white or light surface with a thin film coating, I would like to avoid it becoming dull or scratched.
Are there any specific cleaning products or methods that help maintain these surfaces well over time? I would appreciate it if someone could share their experience here – maybe also with advice on which cleaning tools to avoid or whether household remedies like vinegar or alcohol are suitable. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hello Maiasu,
I’m using your post as an opportunity to provide a brief guide on how to clean Ikea Brimnes furniture without damaging the surface:
1. Be careful with harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the laminated surface.
2. Use warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap. A soft microfiber cloth is ideal.
3. Stubborn stains can be removed with a lightly dampened cloth, applying gentle pressure.
4. Avoid aggressive household remedies such as vinegar, citric acid, or alcohol, as they may dissolve the surface.
A common mistake is using scouring agents or rough sponges, which create microscopic scratches and dull the surface.
In summary, I recommend: mild soapy water + soft cloth + gentle handling. If stains are very persistent, it’s better to clean gently multiple times rather than being too aggressive.

I have had my Brimnes for 2 years – I often just use lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth, sometimes a little dish soap. Just gently wipe it and then polish it with a dry cloth afterwards. Important: Do not use harsh cleaners, or the surface will quickly start to look worn.
For stubborn stains that are hard to remove: just try my method, clean gently and regularly, and the laminate won’t get damaged. Good luck with the cleaning!
Additional information: The Brimnes surface often consists of a melamine foil on engineered wood. This material is water-resistant but sensitive to organic solvents.
Therefore, I strongly advise against using cleaners containing alcohol or vinegar essence, as these can damage the protective layer and cause long-term delamination.
For regular cleaning:
- Warm water and a mild, neutral detergent
- Soft microfiber cloths
- No abrasive sponges
In laboratory tests, such surfaces were frequently subjected to scratch testing: rough treatment often leads to permanent damage to the top layer.

In addition to the previous explanations, here is my step-by-step guide:
- First, remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Then, use a damp cloth with lukewarm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Wipe surfaces in circular motions.
- Afterwards, polish with a dry cloth.
You should avoid using abrasive sponges, scouring pads, or cleaners containing bleach.
Based on experience: For stubborn stains, be patient and clean gently several times. For example, if you use vinegar, you may temporarily remove stains, but the film structure can be damaged.
Conclusion: The surface requires gentle care; otherwise, it will lose its shine and become dull.
