Hello everyone,

I am looking for a suitable cleaner for the surfaces of the Ikea Brimnes furniture series. These are mainly made of coated particleboard with a matte or slightly glossy laminate layer.

It is important to me that the cleaner is effective against everyday dirt, grease, and dust without damaging the surface or leaving permanent streaks. Since Ikea often uses special materials, I prefer not to use aggressive or abrasive products.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations for cleaners suitable for Brimnes surfaces? I am especially interested in:
- household products (brands, composition)
- home remedies that are gentle yet effective
- tips for proper use (e.g., dilution, contact time)

If anyone has had negative experiences (discoloration, damage), that would also be important to know in order to avoid it.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

For cleaning Ikea Brimnes surfaces, I recommend using neutral, mildly alkaline cleaners that do not contain abrasives or solvents. These surfaces are laminated, which means that aggressive or acidic cleaners can damage the protective layer and cause dull spots.

Ideal options are:
- All-purpose cleaners with pH values between 7 and 9
- Special laminate cleaners or furniture care products approved for coated surfaces

Before use, test a small area to avoid any issues. After cleaning, wipe the surfaces with clean water and dry them with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent streaks.

Hey, I also have Brimnes and usually just use warm water with a little bit of dish soap. Sounds simple, but it works great!

- Don’t use too much dish soap, or it can leave a film.
- Clean with a soft microfiber cloth and then wipe the surface dry.

This way, the surfaces stay clean and shine nicely without harsh chemicals 😄. Of course, for tougher stains, try a mild all-purpose cleaner.

Avoid cleaners containing alcohol or bleach. Usually, water and dish soap are sufficient. For stubborn stains, use specialized laminate cleaners.

For clarification: It is important to correctly identify the surface before choosing a cleaner. Brimnes typically uses melamine- or melamine resin-coated particleboard, which is well protected against moisture but still sensitive to harsh chemicals and abrasive agents.

Procedure:
- First, wipe with a dry dust cloth
- Prepare cleaning solution according to the level of dirt: 1 drop of neutral dish soap in one liter (1 quart) of lukewarm water
- Damp the cloth lightly, never apply it wet
- Avoid scrubbing motions, wipe gently only
- Immediately follow with a clean cloth to prevent residue

Avoid alcohol, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners, as these can dull or damage the surface. Also, do not use abrasive sponges or high-abrasion microfiber cloths.

What are the toughest stains you encounter? Grease, coffee, ink?

I agree with the previous comments and would like to add that you should generally be careful with Ikea furniture, as the coatings vary in sensitivity. For Brimnes, I have had good experiences using a mild cleaner based on glycol (e.g., available as an all-purpose cleaner). It is important not to scrub too hard to avoid damaging the laminate layer.

A tip: If something is sticky, use a damp cloth and let it sit briefly before applying any mechanical force. This also reduces the risk of dulling the finish.
