Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of assembling an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe, but I have very limited space to work in—my room is quite small and tightly furnished. My specific question to the community is: What tips or proven strategies are there for assembling the HEMNES series, especially when there is little free space to move around and organize the parts? I am interested in everything from optimal preparation and handling the many individual pieces to possible tricks for assembly in a confined area. Thank you very much for your help!

I actually have only about 2 square meters (22 square feet) of workspace, and I also have to consider the setup under the sloped ceiling – the working height is limited there.

In your case, I would recommend assembling the cabinet completely on the floor beforehand, as much as possible. Using the wall for support still works if you clamp the side panels, but the sloped ceiling makes this difficult. Use long aids like sturdy battens or table legs as extensions to stabilize parts during the assembly process.

Important: Take your time with each construction phase and regularly check whether the structure is level, as clamping points can be more problematic with limited height. If possible, build the basic frame with the back panel on the floor first before mounting the doors.

That sounds really challenging with that sloped ceiling and so little space. If I were you, I would try to break the work into smaller sections and clean up each part thoroughly before moving on to the next step. It also helps to have a second pair of hands, but you’ve probably already thought of that. Keep your spirits up—the Hemnes is sturdy, and that will pay off.

Install the door frames first, then build the main structure. This requires less space in the long run.

A precise planning of the assembly process can save time and stress when working in limited space conditions. My suggestion:

- Sort all components by construction phases at the beginning.
- Install the back panel last, as it stabilizes the cabinet and prevents you from having to constantly support it during assembly.
- Always assemble doors separately and attach them preferably at the end.

This sequence reduces space requirements and simplifies the assembly in small rooms.

Good morning, after your help, I tried the first step yesterday and actually prepared the side panels and floor parts on the ground. I noticed that I should create a seating option nearby to protect my back. Are there any recommendations for seat heights or positions during assembly when there is limited space? I want to avoid shaking too much or working unergonomically while screwing later on.

You should definitely choose a seat height that keeps your upper arm roughly horizontal when screwing. Ideally, sit on a stool or chair without a backrest to increase your range of movement. If space is tight, it also helps to have an armrest or a small table in front of you to set the screwdriver down between tasks. Make sure your hands are well supported to avoid fatigue and shaking.
