Aris30Hello everyone, I am currently working on aligning several Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets so that the doors fit perfectly in the end. My specific question is: What is the best way to position the Metod cabinets to ensure that the doors sit flush against each other and the frame, without noticeable gaps? I am not referring to the adjustable screws on the doors themselves, but rather the basic alignment of the cabinet carcasses in relation to each other and the wall. Are there any recommended procedures, useful tools, or important settings I should keep in mind? I would appreciate tips that focus especially on the fundamentals of assembling and aligning the cabinet carcasses.
Hello Aris30, a very good question that many people have when assembling Metod cabinets! First, you should ensure that the cabinets are placed on a level surface. It’s best to use a spirit level to check each cabinet box individually for height and horizontality. After that, take your time to align the side panels of the cabinets precisely with each other and against the wall. It often helps to clamp the cabinets together before you start working with the connecting screws. This way, you avoid small angle errors that can later cause uneven gaps in the doors.
Additionally, it is important to use the connecting fittings correctly and completely—the Domi connectors supplied by Ikea are essential for a stable, aligned unit. If you value doors with a precise fit and appearance, you should rely less on wooden wedges and more on fully adjustable feet and careful alignment of the cabinet box height. Aligning the cabinets against the wall is also crucial: if the wall is uneven, the cabinet box cannot stand straight, which makes adjusting the doors more difficult.

Hello Aris30, to align your cabinets optimally, here is a brief step-by-step guide that I often use:
- Set up each cabinet individually and check its position from bottom to top with a spirit level—aiming for "perfectly vertical."
- Adjust the base feet so that the cabinet stands firmly without wobbling.
- Place the cabinets side by side along the floor line, fitting them exactly together. It’s helpful, especially with several cabinets, to use a spirit level horizontally across the top edge.
- Fasten the cabinets using the connecting screws (cam connectors), but leave them slightly loose so you can still make adjustments.
- Use clamps to precisely align the cabinet heights.
- Check the alignment from different angles, since small differences may be hidden by parallel viewing.
- Only after everything is checked, tighten the connecting screws securely.
- Finally, adjust the doors using the hinge adjustment wheels to achieve a perfect gap between them.
Common mistakes include an uneven base, lack of checking with the spirit level, or tightening the connecting screws too early. Hopefully, this structured approach helps you.

For precise alignment of Ikea Metod cabinets, please consider the following:
- Check the floor surface with a level and make adjustments as needed.
- Place the cabinets side by side and connect them using the designated cam fittings, but do not fully tighten them yet.
- Use a long spirit level or straightedge to align the cabinets to the exact same height.
- It is important to align the depth relative to the wall – if the wall is uneven, wooden shims or adjustable legs are recommended to compensate for any differences.
- Only after the cabinet bodies are correctly aligned should the connection screws be fully tightened.
Only then can the fine adjustment of the doors be carried out. In practice, a clean and accurate assembly of the cabinet frames results in the best fit for the doors. This aspect is often underestimated.

For this purpose, the cabinet boxes should, if necessary, be placed with small gaps, especially at the back wall—this way, slight wall irregularities can be compensated for without affecting the door gaps.
Anyone wise will take enough time for this and check step by step using a spirit level, including vertically and diagonally. It can also be helpful, when dealing with multiple cabinets, to tighten the connector screws only by hand at first and then gradually tighten them fully step by step. This allows for making minor adjustments.

Thanks in advance for your advice! One more question regarding the role of the back panel: When installing the Metod cabinets, should I install the back panel first and then align the cabinets, or should I align the cabinets without the back panel and then attach the back panel? I’m concerned that inserting the back panel might cause lateral shifts. Also, are there any differences in alignment when installing cabinets with or without a plinth (i.e., freestanding)?
