Hello everyone, I have been considering buying the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe for some time, mainly because of its storage capacity and design. My main question is quite specific: How stable and durable is this wardrobe really after several years of use, say 5 years or more?

I am asking because I have read that furniture made from particleboard and similar materials often experiences issues with warping, hinges, or shelf supports – especially if they are frequently opened and heavily used. So, I am interested not only in whether it is stable at first, but also how well the construction and materials have held up in households where the wardrobe is used daily.

It would be helpful to know if signs of wear such as wobbling, squeaking noises, or even cracks have appeared, and how attaching it to the wall affects its long-term stability.

I look forward to hearing about personal experiences or any tips on what to watch out for during assembly and use to ensure the longest possible lifespan.

I would like to add that the stability of Brimnes largely depends on the environment and usage. High humidity or irregular maintenance can cause the material to deteriorate more quickly.

It is also important to check the screws occasionally, especially with frequent loading and unloading. Personally, after 7 years, I have noticed only minimal signs of wear, with hardly any impact on stability.

In summary: The construction is solid enough when assembled and used properly. It is less suitable for those expecting to store heavy furniture or use it professionally. However, it is perfectly adequate for private households with normal use.

The BRIMNES wardrobe is, in my opinion, a prime example of affordable furniture that offers quite good durability under normal use. Proper assembly is crucial—especially ensuring the back panel is firmly attached, as this prevents many stability issues.

My wardrobe has been in use for 6 years. The doors still work perfectly, and I only had to readjust one hinge. There is no wobbling. I would also recommend avoiding overloading, as the shelves are somewhat fragile.

If someone leaves the wardrobe doors open during the day, minor squeaking noises may occur, which can usually be resolved by lubricating the hinges.

I have owned the cabinet for about 3 years. The stability is really appropriate for the price. There is no wobbling in my case, thanks to the wall mounting. However, if it is overfilled or used incorrectly, it is no surprise that problems occur.

Thank you for the feedback so far; it has been very helpful. I am still interested in how you assess the stress on the hinges over the years.

Has anyone experienced issues with squeaky or loose doors? And do you have any tips on how to best prevent or fix these problems?

Also: how important is it for the back panel to be completely flat and taut? Sometimes I feel that slight distortion during assembly could later affect the stability.

The hinges on BRIMNES are simple drilled-in hinges with soft-close damping, relatively sturdy for particleboard furniture. In daily use, they should last several years without major issues. Only with extremely frequent opening or heavy loads might they become loose or start squeaking, which can usually be fixed by readjustment and applying a bit of silicone lubricant.

Very important. The back panel significantly stabilizes the frame and prevents twisting. Even slight distortions can cause the cabinet to wobble. It’s best to align the back panel properly during assembly and fully secure it with the small nails.

I don’t have any squeaking noises, but yes, once I had to tighten a hinge. Just tighten it with the appropriate screwdriver, and that will fix it.
