Hello everyone, I am moving to an area that occasionally experiences minor tremors and vibrations. I own the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and am concerned about its stability during such events. How secure is the Brimnes wardrobe in the event of an earthquake or strong vibrations? Are there any known issues with its stability or wall anchoring? Is the construction sturdy enough to prevent it from tipping over or falling apart during shaking? I would appreciate hearing if anyone has experience with this wardrobe under such conditions or if there are specific installation tips to improve its safety. Thank you for your helpful answers!

Hey Mahmud10, good point about the earth tremors! 😅 The Brimnes isn’t exactly heavy, but it’s built sturdy enough for everyday use. The key is the wall mounting – always make sure the brackets are properly fitted and the cabinet is securely anchored. You can also add an extra wall bracket for added safety during minor vibrations. The risk of tipping mainly occurs if it’s not correctly installed or not fixed to the wall. So: a solid screw setup, and everything will be fine! 😉

Hello Mahmud10, here is a more technical explanation: The Brimnes wardrobe is made from particleboard designed for moderate loads and typical residential conditions. The construction uses back panels for reinforcement; however, these are relatively thin, so the stability during strong vibrations is limited. Designs with multiple doors are especially critical since hinges and joints undergo more stress. In the event of an earthquake, it is therefore very important how well the wardrobe is anchored to the wall—using furniture anchors or wall plugs in load-bearing masonry is recommended. Without wall anchoring, the risk of tipping increases significantly! Have you checked whether the wall is stable enough? And whether appropriate wall plugs were used? The importance of proper anchoring is often underestimated.

Brimnes is stable under minor vibrations, but wall anchoring is mandatory. Otherwise, it may tip over. Always tighten screws securely and use appropriate wall plugs.

Hello Mahmud10, I understand your concern, as ground tremors can have unpredictable effects. The Brimnes wardrobe is generally designed to be stable for residential use, but it is not specifically engineered for seismic events. Make sure to use the supplied wall anchors and install them into a load-bearing wall. One way to secure it further is by adding a safety brace attached at the top of the wardrobe and the wall, similar to earthquake safety brackets used for shelving. It can also be helpful to secure the doors with an additional magnetic latch to prevent them from opening and the contents from falling out during shaking. If you like, I can explain some preparatory measures.

I completely understand your concern. I live in an earthquake-prone area myself and once had a similar wardrobe that wobbled slightly during the last noticeable tremor. Fortunately, it was anchored to the wall, and there was no damage. In such situations, I still feel a bit uneasy, even with the securing in place. It’s important to make sure beforehand that the wall mounting is properly and firmly installed; otherwise, the whole piece of furniture offers little safety. You simply feel more comfortable when the wardrobe stands securely, especially during uncertain moments.
