Hello everyone, I am currently planning a redesign of my kitchen and have already installed an IKEA Metod kitchen system. Now I am wondering: is it possible to modify or redesign the existing IKEA Metod kitchen units afterward, for example by expanding cabinets, replacing doors, or altering built-in components, without losing stability or functionality? I want to stay as flexible as possible since my requirements might change over time. Are there any experiences, tips, or specific limitations I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey! Yes, that’s definitely possible! IKEA Metod is designed to be very flexible—you can often easily modify or expand the cabinets. Changing doors, adding extra shelves, or installing drawers is no problem at all! 😃 The important thing is to have the right accessories and ensure the connectors fit properly. You can definitely do it! Just keep at it and try it out! 👍

Metod furniture is designed to be modular. Doors and fronts can be swapped, and cabinets can be expanded with the matching wall cabinets. However, any modifications should always be checked against the IKEA instructions.

For clarification: IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets are based on a standardized grid dimension of 60 cm (24 inches) width for base cabinets, which generally makes modifications easier. The carcasses are connected using cam connectors and can be disassembled and reassembled afterwards, allowing for repositioning or replacement. However, it should be noted that repeated assembly and disassembly can cause material fatigue, especially with the connecting dowels and fittings.

Replacing fronts (doors, drawer fronts) is straightforward as long as the new parts are compatible with the original fittings. Extensions, such as adding wall cabinets or additional base cabinets, also require adherence to the modular system. On the other hand, individual modifications, like shortening cabinet side panels or drilling custom holes, are not without limitations and can compromise stability.

In summary: Subsequent remodeling in terms of replacement and extension is possible and is generally supported by IKEA’s modular system. However, when it comes to individual modifications, caution and craftsmanship skills are necessary.

Wow, thanks for the great information, especially @roryvin! Metod is really brilliant for these kinds of renovation projects. I completely renovated my kitchen with it last year and later replaced individual cabinet doors and handles without any issues. Just super flexible! You just need to be careful not to be too rough! 😉

I can understand feeling uncertain when making changes to a building after the initial construction. I felt the same way when I wanted to modify my Metod kitchen—I was worried I might damage something or that a cabinet could suddenly become unstable. The important thing is to take your time and carefully disassemble the parts. If possible, remove the units completely instead of trying to work around everything in place. If you want to change doors, make sure to carefully check the mounting points beforehand. Sometimes I felt that the hinges weren’t seated firmly enough when reinstalling the doors—that requires patience. But in the end, everything worked out really well!
