Hello everyone, I am planning my kitchen using the IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and want to remain especially flexible, as my needs will likely change in the near future. Does anyone have experience with how to cleverly modify and expand Metod kitchen cabinets to adapt them individually to changing requirements? I am particularly interested in practical tips on which modules and system components work well together, how to easily expand or rearrange the cabinets, and whether it might be worthwhile to use special additions like interior drawers, inserts, or extra shelves. Thanks in advance for your advice and exchange of ideas!

Metod kitchen cabinets are genuinely well designed for modularity.

- The base cabinets can be easily expanded since the system uses standardized widths (20 cm (8 inches), 40 cm (16 inches), 60 cm (24 inches), etc.).

- For flexible use, pull-outs and internal organizers such as the VARIERA insert are very useful.

- Make sure the metal frames and legs are compatible, as this makes retrofitting easier.

- For modifications, the cabinet doors with click-system hinges are helpful to quickly change the fronts or layouts.

Overall, the components are designed to allow easy additions or changes later on. It is important to plan the installation to maintain access for future adjustments, for example by leaving sufficient tolerance in the placement.

I think Metod is basically the Lego universe for kitchen enthusiasts! 😄 You can really build, expand, and modify almost anything. A little tip from me: use the drawer inserts to keep everything organized – organization is half the kitchen’s life, especially when you have guests or need to find something quickly.

That’s true, I’ve already changed my doors twice – super easy and no mess with tools!

Another important factor for flexible redesign is planning with regard to anchoring and fastening points.

- The Metod cabinets are designed for modular modification, but the wall mounting should be chosen to withstand frequent changes.

- For expansions, I recommend selecting a full-height cabinet to add extra shelves at the top or bottom.

- Additional wall-mounted cabinets with drop-down doors or corner solutions fit well within the system to optimize space usage.

When using pull-out inserts, attention should be paid to their respective weight, such as for wave-shaped trays or hotter zones.

If you want to stay flexible, start with cabinets without much interior structure and add the compartments later as needed.

Open shelving units are also practical. This way, you can add boxes or inserts at any time.

When purchasing, make sure the base heights and doors match so everything fits together.

I wonder how sustainable the idea of flexible remodeling really is with Metod. IKEA does use standard dimensions, but doesn’t the final material, a rather thin particleboard composite, sometimes limit stability with frequent modifications?

These interior systems are good, but how durable are they really when, for example, heavy pots are constantly taken in and out? I would additionally recommend considering durable fittings alongside flexibility during the planning stage.

Are there any experiences regarding which components work best for frequent use?
