Hello everyone, I am currently planning a redesign of my kitchen and have already installed an IKEA Metod kitchen system. Now I am wondering: is it possible to modify or redesign the existing IKEA Metod kitchen units afterward, for example by expanding cabinets, replacing doors, or altering built-in components, without losing stability or functionality? I want to stay as flexible as possible since my requirements might change over time. Are there any experiences, tips, or specific limitations I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your help!

Regarding the retrofitting and remodeling of IKEA Metod kitchen units, I can add the following:
- The modules are fundamentally designed to be flexibly assembled and disassembled.
- Doors and fronts can be swapped without much effort, provided the fittings are compatible.
- For expansions such as additional cabinets or shelves, the manufacturer offers suitable extension parts.
- If the cabinet itself needs modification, for example shortening the sides or adding extra cutouts, craftsmanship skills and knowledge of structural stability are important.
- For careful remodeling, it is advisable to check the load limits, especially when installing built-in sinks or electrical appliances.
I have remodeled several Metod kitchens myself and can confirm that precise planning and following the assembly instructions are crucial to maintain stability and functionality.

Replacing fronts (doors, drawer fronts) is easily possible as long as the new parts are compatible with the original fittings.Thank you for the detailed explanations, @roryvin! One specific question is whether there are any restrictions when combining new fronts with older cabinet carcass series. I plan to partially replace the fronts with newer models, but the carcasses will remain. Has anyone tried this? Are there any dimension or attachment differences that need to be considered?

A specific question would be whether there are any limitations when combining new fronts with older cabinet boxes. In general, the fastening systems of IKEA Metod have remained largely compatible over several years. However, there have been minor changes in door hinges and drawer runners, especially with the introduction of new designs or features like soft-close. As a result, older cabinet boxes may not always accept newer fronts directly without adapters or additional modifications.
I recommend comparing the mounting points of the new fronts in detail with those of the existing cabinet boxes. If you want to avoid major adjustments to the boxes, it is advisable to choose fronts from the same generation or specifically check compatibility information from IKEA.

Basically, the IKEA Metod fastening systems have remained largely compatible over several years.Exactly! I partially replaced my Metod fronts last year, and the doors fit perfectly. When working between "old" and brand-new fronts, it’s worth checking the door hardware closely, as sometimes you need a different hinge. That’s what I did, and it went smoothly! Good luck!
