ERTANLUHello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of securely installing Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in an older apartment. My main concern is the old walls and their varying condition, as I want to avoid any risk of the cabinets eventually coming loose or damaging the wall. Does anyone have experience with the best and safest ways to attach Metod kitchen cabinets to mostly thin, sometimes crumbling, older walls? Are there special anchors, fastening techniques, or additional precautions to consider? I would really appreciate concrete tips or recommendations for suitable tools!
I would recommend carefully checking the wall composition – whether it consists of solid bricks, hollow bricks, or plaster carrier boards. For solid bricks, screws with suitable heavy-duty anchors work quite well. In case of cavities, special cavity anchors or chemical anchors are helpful. Additionally, fastenings should preferably be attached to load-bearing parts of the wall to ensure long-lasting stability.

With solid bricks, screws with appropriate heavy-duty anchors work quite well. Thanks, that already helps. In my case, it's a hollow old building wall with plaster, behind which there are probably partly bricks and partly air. I'm wondering if chemical anchors would be a good solution and how the curing process works exactly, especially in often more humid kitchen areas.
Also, I've noticed that the Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets come with mounting brackets that seem rather light-duty. Do you have experience whether these brackets should be replaced, or if additional wooden battens would be advisable to create more stability on the wall?
Chemical anchors are indeed a very reliable solution for old walls with cavities, as they distribute the load pressure over a larger area. It is important to thoroughly clean the drilled holes before inserting the anchors and to allow sufficient curing time, which usually takes 12 to 24 hours. For installing Ikea Metod cabinets, I recommend additionally securing sturdy wooden battens to the wall if the masonry appears too fragile. These battens can serve as supports and better bear the load.
Interesting point about the wooden battens! I did something similar with my old kitchen: first, I mounted a sturdy, well-secured wooden batten on the wall, and then attached the Metod wall cabinets to it. This not only improved stability but also made the installation much easier. It allows you to compensate for small wall unevenness effectively. Of course, you need appropriately strong anchors for the wooden batten, but the effort is definitely worth it!
