Alfred-nar24 Apr 2023 07:13Hello everyone, I am currently planning to combine Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with furniture from other series to create a custom and functional setup. My question is: what should I consider during construction and installation when mixing Metod cabinets with non-Metod furniture? Specifically, I am interested in how to smoothly handle differences in height, attachment points, and design transitions. Are there any proven techniques or special connection solutions you would recommend? I am also curious whether it is worth making adjustments when components have different depths, and what key factors to watch out for in that case. I look forward to your tips and experiences!
Hello Alfred-nar, your concern is very well formulated and covers important points. Basically, I would advise you to first measure the dimensions and heights of all furniture parts accurately. With Metod, you will find standardized heights, but other series might use different measurements. If you want to combine cabinets, it is especially important to align the plinth height and total height precisely; otherwise, the overall appearance can quickly look inconsistent. For fastening, you can often work with base cabinets and mounting plates, which help to even out heights. Corner brackets or custom-made wooden frames are also practical solutions for stability. Visually, using the same colors or handles helps—uniform design looks more harmonious. If the depths vary, I would always adjust the fronts or at least choose edge bands that create a more visually consistent look. With some effort, you can create truly individual combinations this way. I would be interested to know which specific furniture series you plan to combine?
Hello Alfred-nar, I find your question very practical because combining Ikea Metod with other furniture series is technically challenging. I’ve put together a step-by-step guide for you:
- First, you should precisely measure the height, width, and depth of all the cabinets. You already mentioned this, but it’s not something to take for granted.
- Check whether the other furniture series have the same layout for the screw points or if you need to manually adjust deviations. If the base drilling holes don’t match, you can add your own drillings, but be careful not to compromise stability.
- Height differences can usually be resolved with extension strips or spacer blocks. The choice of material is important here: wood offers more flexibility than plastic strips.
- To connect the units without visible breaks, I recommend using connecting brackets attached from the back to achieve a smooth front appearance.
- If the depth is different, you can either align the fronts or add a filler panel. Metod has a standard depth of 60 cm (24 inches), while other furniture might be 55 or 52 cm (22 or 20.5 inches) deep—5 cm (2 inches) differences are common. A custom-fit filler strip can create visual harmony here.
- Make sure to securely anchor all cabinets to the wall, especially when combining different modules that cannot be directly connected to each other. Most Ikea models have special wall brackets that can also be used universally. For your planning, I also recommend paying attention to the load capacity of the fixing elements, especially when combining Metod with tall units from other series.
- Finally, I suggest painting the cabinet bodies uniformly or covering them with comparable veneers to minimize color differences.

I understand how complex it can be to combine different furniture styles. I personally felt quite uncertain when I matched my Metod kitchen with vintage wooden furniture. One tip: take your time measuring carefully and allow some extra space, especially regarding depth. I also find it helpful to create a sketch showing heights and projections. This adds confidence and makes installation more relaxed. If you arrange the individual elements as a trial before installation, you can better assess any irregularities. A little patience will save you a lot of stress in the end. How are you feeling so far with the preparation?

I would be interested to know which furniture series you specifically want to combine? I had planned to connect Metod base cabinets with existing tall cabinets from the Ikea Pax series. The Pax cabinets are partly taller and have a different depth. I am also considering placing shelves from the Billy series next to them as room dividers. This creates several challenges regarding depths and colors. The connection areas between Metod and Pax are especially difficult because of the different assembly methods and wall mounting systems Ikea uses for these units. Regarding the Billy shelves, I would also like to know if it is possible to stabilize them by attaching them to the Metod cabinets somehow, or if they absolutely need to be anchored to the wall.
