I am currently planning to set up a walk-in closet and am considering whether the Ikea PAX system is really suitable for this purpose. My requirements are quite clear: I want flexible interior fittings, solid quality, and the easiest possible assembly. The closet should accommodate hanging rods, shelves, and drawers, and be adaptable to different room sizes. Has anyone had experience with using PAX as the basis for a walk-in closet, and is it truly practical, or are there better alternatives? I am particularly interested in the stability, storage capacity, and versatility, as I need not only simple wardrobe solutions but also a customized setup tailored to my needs.

The maximum load per shelf is about 25 kilograms (55 pounds), so be careful with heavy footwear or heavier items.Thank you, that’s an important point for me. I actually plan to store heavy winter jackets and shoes as well. Would you recommend reinforcing or dividing individual sections for that reason? Are there PAX extensions with stronger shelves available? Also, I’m interested in how to handle the back panel – is the PAX one sufficient, or should an additional backing be added to improve stability?
There are reinforced shelves available from IKEA or third-party suppliers that can also be combined with PAX. For heavy clothing, it makes sense to distribute the load across several smaller compartments. The back panels of PAX are relatively thin; additional reinforcement with sturdy boards significantly increases stability.
I really like PAX too because it allows for a lot of creativity 😄 If you stay flexible, you can elegantly work around curves or recesses. Several friends have the wardrobe and it brings a lot of happiness in the morning – when your outfit is organized, everything just goes better 😉

An extra back panel made of wood or metal improves the overall structure. Without proper wall mounting, I wouldn’t recommend it.
