I am currently planning the setup of a larger bedroom and am undecided about the IKEA PAX wardrobes, especially regarding the durability and longevity of the different models. My question to you is: Which IKEA PAX models are particularly sturdy, meaning resistant to daily use such as frequent opening, heavier loads, and possibly strain from larger clothing items or bags? I am interested in differences in the thickness of the carcass material as well as the quality of the fittings and shelves. If anyone has specific experience related to stability, potential weak points, or recommended versions, I would appreciate detailed feedback.

From experience, I also know how quickly disappointment can arise when relying on the visually appealing Pax models, which can deteriorate rapidly under heavy use. What helped me at the time was upgrading the interior with sturdier shelves and rods.

What I have also learned: Especially with very tall cabinets, it is essential to ensure proper wall mounting, otherwise it can quickly become a safety hazard. Safety is, after all, also part of durability.

From a technical perspective, I recommend checking the load-bearing capacity specifications of individual shelves and hanging rods. Standard wood-based panel shelves often have a maximum load capacity of 15 kg (33 lbs), while metal shelves or additional reinforcement with brackets can support significantly more. This also makes the cabinet modules more robust, especially in combination. Additionally, the fasteners (e.g., dowels, screws) should be properly installed to prevent warping and instability.

I would like to add to nubar’s point: Many people underestimate that not only the material quality but also the wall mounting and construction are crucial for durability. A secure installation using the supplied metal brackets and appropriate anchors for the specific wall type is essential. Additionally, for heavy loads, it is advisable to reinforce certain shelves with metal supports, which IKEA sometimes also offers.

That matches my experience. I specifically installed extra metal brackets because I store relatively heavy items. You can notice this in everyday use: the floors hardly bend at all.

Take 56cm (22 inches) depth plus metal frame, soft-close doors. Done.

Here is a summary considering Narmo’s requirements:

- Choose a PAX wardrobe with a minimum depth of 58 cm (23 inches), as a greater depth provides better mechanical stability.
- Important: Prefer metal-reinforced side and back panels.
- Soft-close door hinges are more durable, reduce maintenance, and increase comfort.
- Use interior components with reinforced shelves (metal supports or thicker boards).
- Store heavy items and large bags in the lower section with extra reinforcement.
- If the wardrobe is free-standing, be sure to secure it to the wall, selecting appropriate wall anchors depending on the wall type.

If anyone knows specific model numbers or names from the IKEA range, please feel free to add them.

Narmo, once you decide on a model, I can also provide tips for assembly or retrofitting.
